CITyOF THEBES \nBY REBECCA STEFOFFILLUSTRATED BY PAT PARIS \norylon's father pointed to the far-off lake \nsparkling in the sun.\"Our city of Thebes is blessedwith water,\"he said proudly.\"No one can count thesprings and streams that flow here all year long.”Corylon had heard that other cities in Greecesometimes ran short of water during the hot, drysummers.Yes,the people of Thebes were lucky. \nHe glanced over his shoulder to the Cadmea, the large stone fortress that crowned the hill ofThebes. Many times Corylon had heard howThebes was founded by a prince named Cadmus. The god Apollo told Cadmus to follow a sacredcow and build a city on the spot where the cow laydown to sleep. That was how Thebes had comeinto being. \nCadmus himself had built the Cadmea, which was the heart of the city. \nCorylon looked out over the villages andfarms scattered across the plain below. He hopedthat he would be lucky enough to spot a group ofTheban soldiers practicing there.Corylon hadreceived his own first sword and shield on histhirteenth birthday, not long past.Soon he and theother Theban boys his age would begin theirmilitary training. \nThebes was famous for its army. Its cavalry, orsoldiers on horseback, were among the finestfighters in Greece.“I'll be one of them one day,”Corylon vowed, his heart racing. \n\"Come,\"his father said.\"We'll go to the market.\" \nCorylon and his father left the city wall andmade their way through the maze of narrow streetsto the marketplace, the busiest part of Thebes.Woodsmoke from cooking fires hung in the air.Corylon's mouth watered at the scents of spicygrilled meat and fresh-baked bread. \nTraffic in the marketplace was brisk as theproduce of the countryside was carried intoThebes through the seven gates that opened thecity's walls.Oxcarts carried jars of grain and oliveoil.Fishermen hauled baskets of squirming eelsfrom the lake. And herdsmen brought meat andwool to market. \nFather had halted in front of a potter who wasselling his wares.Picking up a large black vasethat was beautifully painted with dancing figures,he turned to Corylon.\"Perhaps this would make agood gift for your sister,\"he suggested.Corylonagreed.He knew that Megara would love thepicture of the whirling dancers.Megara would lovethis market, too.Maybe she will see it some day,he thought. \nTwelve-year-old Megara could onlydream of seeing the Cadmea and the viewfrom the walls of Thebes.Women and girls \nof citizen families in ancient Greece seldom lefttheir homes. When they did go outside, their fathers, brothers,or husbands went with them.Only at weddings, funerals, and religious festivals did women of citizenfamilies take part in public life. \nNext year!thought Megara excitedly. Then shewould be old enough to join the festivals. At last, shewould see something of the world beyond the gardenwalls! \nMegara lived with her mother, her aunt, andthe family's female servants inside the women'squarters of the house.Among the families ofancient Thebes, men and women lived fairlyseparate lives. Her brother Corylon had lived withhis mother and sister in the women's quarters untilhe was six.Now Megara saw him only rarely.","cbCaifglQNB4n4fE","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifglQNB4n4fE","pdf",1493045,"English","# City of Thebes\n## Corylon’s dreams and training\n## The marketplace and daily life\n## Megara’s world
