food,con-structing underwater dens, battling his ownkind and struggling to escape thegreatest threatto his life-poachers. \nMary Adrian is a well-known author of chil-dren's books. Here, she presents the alligator-usually pictured as a fearsome creature-as afascinating member of the animal community, helping to maintain the balance of nature.Thedrawings of Genevieve Vaughan-Jacksonround out a book butotherwise looked much like those living at the presenttime. \nThe American alligator is different from its close rela-tive the American crocodile. It is darker, has a muchbroader snout, and lives mainly in fresh water. \nBothathe alligator and the crocodile belong to theCrocodytidae family.Crocodiles are found in a numberof different countries, but only two species of alligatorslive in the world today. They are the American alligator,Alligator mississippiensis, found in the southern part ofthe United States, and its smaller cousin,Alligatorsinensis, which inhabits the Yangtze River in China. \nAE有eologists have found evidence thatpre-SeminoleIndians lived in Florida before the coming of the whiteman. They caught alligators in traps and used theirmeat, especially the tails, for food.
