Focuses on the relevance of AI in digital classrooms, its potential to enhance lesson planning, assessment creation, rubric development, and individualized feedback, and the ethical, inclusive, and human-centered guidance needed for responsible use. Addresses professional development gaps in primary education, barriers like limited training and digital literacy, and why targeted, practical support is essential for equitable, engaging learning.","19 \nThe AI-empowered Teacher: Transforming Teaching Practices and Professional Growth \nChristina Varnava Vasou1* and Maria Meletiou-Mavrotheris2 \n1 Cyprus Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth & European University Cyprus, Nicosia, Cyprus \n2 Department of Education Sciences, European University Cyprus, Nicosia, Cyprus \n*Corresponding author: [cvasou@te.schools.ac.cy](cvasou@te.schools.ac.cy) \nIntroduction \nThe Role and Relevance of AI in Modern Education \nIn today’s increasingly digital world, artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming educational landscapes across all levels. What once sounded like science fiction—automated lesson planning, intelligent tutoring systems, and real-time learning analytics—is now a growing reality in classrooms worldwide. AI offers promising solutions to persistent challenges in education, including the need for differentiated instruction, administrative overload, and unequal access to resources (Zhai et al. , 2021; Baidoo-Anu & Owusu Ansah, 2023; Lampou, 2023; Tuomi, 2018) . \nOne of the most impactful developments in this space has been the rise of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which are capable of producing human-like text and engaging in meaningful dialogue across a range of subjects (Lund & Wang, 2023; Wang & Lin, 2023; Brown et al., 2020) . These tools go beyond automation—they actively augment the teaching process by supporting educators in lesson design, assessment creation, rubric development, and even personalized student feedback (Baidoo-Anu & Owusu Ansah, 2023; Holmes & Miao, 2023) . \nAI in Early Education: Integrating Artificial Intelligence for Inclusive and Effective Learning, First Edition. Edited by Stamatios Papadakis. \n© 2026 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Published 2026 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. \nIntroduction \n337 \nBut AI is not here to replace teachers. Instead, it functions best when it supportsand amplifies the educator’s role, empowering them to focus more on creativity, emotional intelligence, and individualized instruction (Zhai et al., 2021; Miao, Holmes, Huang, & Zhang, 2021). According to UNESCO’s global guidance, integrating AI tools into teaching should center on human agency, ethics, inclusion, and professional autonomy (Holmes & Miao, 2023) . When applied mindfully, AI can enhance pedagogical practices and contribute to more equitable, efficient, and engaging learning experiences for all students. \nStill, despite these promising possibilities, concerns and misconceptions about AI in education persist (Holmes & Miao, 2023; Miao, Holmes, Huang, & Zhang, 2021). Many educators remain skeptical or unsure about how AI systems function, particularly within the emotionally complex environment of primary classrooms (Zhai et al., 2021) . \nAddressing Professional Development Gaps in Primary Education \nOne of the most pressing barriers to effective AI integration is a lack of teacher training and digital literacy, especially at the primary level. While digital tools have long been part of professional development programs, AI-specific training is still scarce. A recent UNESCO report (Holmes & Miao, 2023) noted that very few countries have developed formal strategies or training frameworks to help teachers understand and ethically implement AI in classroom settings. As a result, many teachers are left to navigate these complex technologies independently, often without sufficient support or resources. \nLund and Wang (2023) highlight that even highly capable tools like ChatGPT remain underutilized in educational contexts, not due to disinterest, but because teachers are either unaware of their potential or uncertain about how to integrate them effectively. In their study of AI and academic libraries, they highlight ChatGPT’s potential to support knowledge organization, information retrieval, and communication, while stressing the ongoing need for digital literacy among professionals. \nIn primary education, the gap is ","cbCaijkVy3RLMb1m","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijkVy3RLMb1m","pdf",196527,"English","en",105,"# Introduction\n## The Role and Relevance of AI in Modern Education\n## Addressing Professional Development Gaps in Primary Education\n# Chapter Objectives and Target Audience","[{\"question\":\"How does AI support teachers in modern education according to the chapter?\",\"answer\":\"AI augments teaching by assisting with lesson design, assessment creation, rubric development, and personalized student feedback.
