described in this vol-ume,namely from 1688 to 1815,threerevolutions profoundly influenced mankind.They occurred within the space of a hundredyears and all of them led to war between theBritish and the French.The English Revolutionof 1688 expelled the last Catholic king from theBritish Isles,and finally committed Britain to afierce struggle with the last great king of France,Louis XIV.The American Revolution of 1775separated the English-Speaking Peoples intotwo branches,each with a distinctive outlookand activity,but still fundamentally united bythe same language,as well as by commontraditions and common law.In 1789,by forceof arms and a violent effort,unequalled in itseffects until the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917,France proclaimed to Europe the principles ofequality,liberty,and the rights of man.Beneaththese politicalupheavals,andlargelyunperceivedat the time,other revolutions in science andmanufacture were laying the foundations of theindustrial age in which we live to-day.Thereligious convulsions of the Reformation hadat last subsided.Henceforward Britain wasdivided for practical purposes by Party and notby Creed,and henceforward Europe disputedquestions of material power and national pre-eminence.Whereas the older conceptions hadbeen towards a religious unity,there now openedEuropean struggles for national aggrandise-ment,in which religious currents
