The study argues that Marlowe separates sacred and secular drama, treating antagonistic religious images and counterfeits as productive theatrical forces rather than simple heresy. It examines typology, economic metaphors, sacramental exchange, representative substitution, and art’s “curious sovereignty,” while situating these dynamics within debates over orthodoxy, heresy, and performance.",{"@graph":69,"@context":122},[70,84,105],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":15,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/literature/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/the-aesthetics-of-antichrist-from-christian-drama-to-christopher-marlowe/543209/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/the-aesthetics-of-antichrist-from-christian-drama-to-christopher-marlowe/543209.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"Blue Pony","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-19","2026-10-11",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":44},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",{"@type":106,"mainEntity":107},"FAQPage",[108,114,118],{"name":109,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":111},"What is the central argument about Marlowe’s relationship to sacred drama?","Question",{"text":112,"@type":113},"The book argues that Marlowe separates sacred and secular drama, drawing a clear division between the medieval and the Renaissance in theatrical terms.","Answer",{"name":115,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":116},"How does the book approach “antichrist” aesthetics in early drama?",{"text":117,"@type":113},"It studies antichrist figures and imagery as interpretive forces across genres, using approaches such as typology, sacramental drama, and representative substitution to explain how religious content transforms on stage.",{"name":119,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":120},"Which major themes and chapter topics are covered?",{"text":121,"@type":113},"Key topics include typology and medieval miracula, antichristian economic metaphors, the drama of sacraments, vicarious substitution, and art’s role in producing sacred “counterfeits.”","https://schema.org",{"og:url":83,"og:type":124,"og:title":65,"og:site_name":95,"og:description":67},"article",{"robots":126,"canonical":83},"index,follow",{"doc_id":128,"site_id":62},543209,1791808487,{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":131},{"doc_id":128,"user_id":132,"nickname":92,"user_avatar":133,"doc_module":4,"category_id":14,"category_name":15,"doc_title":65,"doc_description":67,"doc_content":134,"file_id":135,"file_url":136,"file_type":137,"file_size":138,"view_count":44,"is_deleted":4,"is_public":8,"is_downloadable":8,"audit_status":8,"page_count":139,"language":140,"language_code":63,"site_id":62,"html_lang":63,"table_of_contents":141,"faqs":142,"seo_title":143,"seo_description":67,"update_tm":144,"read_time":145},962090760266,"https://ap-avatar.wpscdn.com/davatar_276721f389ce27ea32af1340a28f341c","The Aesthetics of Antichrist \nThe Aesthetics of Antichrist \nFrom Christian Drama to Christopher Marlowe \nJOHN PARKER \nCornell University Press ithaca and london \nCornell University Press gratefully acknowledges receipt of a subvention from Macalester College, which aided in the publication of this book. \nCopyright © 2007 by Cornell University \nAll rights reserved. Almost completely destroyed were the plays that had staged the miraculous lives of saints or explained the Catholic sacraments as a certain avenue to posthumous benefits. For centuries before, daylong cycles honoring the Feast of Corpus Christi had brought to northern England the history of the world from creation to judgment. Now judgment came to them. In 1576, the same year James Burbage founded his Theater, the inhabitants and local authorities of Wakefield received instructions from the ecclesiastical commissioners at York to cease staging anything “wherein the Majesty of God the Father, God the Son, or God the Holy Ghost . . . be counterfeited or represented.”1 Notwithstanding a brief vogue ","cbCaidIbazY8m9yB","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidIbazY8m9yB","pdf",1071201,272,"English","# Preface\n# Acknowledgments\n# Note on Texts and Translations\n# Abbreviations\n# Introduction: After Strange Gods: The Making of Christ and His Doubles\n## The Orthodoxy of Heresy\n## From Script to Scripture\n## The Gospel Truth\n## Christ as Antichrist\n## The Sign of Jonah\n## Salvation through Antichrist\n# 1 Lying Likenesses: Typology and the Medieval Miracula\n# 2 Blood Money: Antichristian Economics and the Drama of the Sacraments\n# 3 Vicarious Criminal: Christ as Representative\n# 4 The Curious Sovereignty of Art: Marlowe’s Sacred Counterfeits\n# Index","[{\"question\":\"What is the central argument about Marlowe’s relationship to sacred drama?\",\"answer\":\"The book argues that Marlowe separates sacred and secular drama, drawing a clear division between the medieval and the Renaissance in theatrical terms.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the book approach “antichrist” aesthetics in early drama?\",\"answer\":\"It studies antichrist figures and imagery as interpretive forces across genres, using approaches such as typology, sacramental drama, and representative substitution to explain how religious content transforms on stage.\"},{\"question\":\"Which major themes and chapter topics are covered?\",\"answer\":\"Key topics include typology and medieval miracula, antichristian economic metaphors, the drama of sacraments, vicarious substitution, and art’s role in producing sacred “counterfeits.”\"}]","The Aesthetics of Antichrist - From Christian Drama to Christopher Marlowe | PDF",1791758270,419]
