rational explana-tion and decided that my fellow religiousbrethren might well be mad.  \nOf course,\"strange\"behavior is not uniqueto ultraorthodox Jews.Many religious acts ap-pear peculiar to the outsider.Pious adherentsthe world over physically differentiate them-selves from others:Moonies shave their heads,Jain monks of India wear contraptions on theirheads and feet to avoid killing insects,and cler-gy almost everywhere dress in outfits that dis-tinguish them from the rest of society.Manypeoples also engage in some form of surgicalalteration.Australian aborigines perform a rit-ual operation on adolescent boys in which abone or a stone is inserted into the penisthrough an incision in the urethra.Jews andMuslims submit their sons to circumcision,and in some Muslim societies daughters arealso subject to circumcision or other forms ofgenital mutilation.Groups as diverse as theNuer of Sudan and the latmul of New Guineaforce their adolescents to undergo ritual scari-fication.Initiation ceremonies,otherwiseknown as rites of passage,are often brutal.Among Native Americans,Apache boys wereforced to bathe in icy water,Luiseno initiateswere required to lie or,at the very least,uncomfortable?Archaeolo-gists tell us that our species has engaged in rit-ual behavior for at least 100,000 years,andevery known culture practices some form of religion.It even survives covertly in those cul-tures where governments have attempted toeliminate spiritual practices.And,despite theunparalleled triumph of scientific rationalismin the 20th century,religion continued to flour-ish.In the United States a steady 40 percent ofthe population attended church regularlythroughout the century.A belief in God (about96 percent),the afterlife (about 72 percent),heaven(about 72 percent)and hell (about 58percent)remained substantial and remarkablyconstant.Why do religious beliefs,practicesand institutions continue to be an essentialcomponent of human
