Portfolio Manager is the industry standard for benchmarking energy performance, with approximately 350,000 buildings benchmarked each year and new accounts and property records added every day. \nTo learn more about Portfolio Manager and the associated web services , visit [http://portfoliomanager.energystar.gov/webservices](http://portfoliomanager.energystar.gov/webservices. Use this)[. Use this](http://portfoliomanager.energystar.gov/webservices. Use this) document to learn how you can begin testing our suite of web services to interact with Portfolio Manager. \nThere is a companion video tutorial that walks through the testing procedures outlined in this document. The full video can be viewed here and there are timestamps to specific sections noted in bold throughout this document. Click on the timestamps throughout this document to refer to a specific section of the online video.1 \nTesting Tools and Requirements (Video starts at 00:00:06) \nBefore you begin testing, you need to make sure you have the right tools. In particular: \n1. Basic System and Software Requirements – Portfolio Manager uses Representational State Transfer (REST)-based web services. This allows you to choose any programming language that supports the [HTTP protocol](HTTP protocol) to develop your implementation. \n2. Sending Data to Portfolio Manager – Web services are intended to facilitate software-tosoftware communication. Therefore, when you are testing or using web services , you will typically use your own custom software to send calls directly to (and receive responses from) Portfolio Manager. Because the primary use case is automated transmission , EPA does not have its own custom REST client or submission window. However, when you \nare beginning testing, you may find it useful to submit individual XML files manually. If \nyou are interested in manual submission, you can use one of any number of free REST \nclients available in the market (e.g. , Postman) . \n3. Preparing XML Schema – Although it is not required, we strongly suggest that you use \nan XML editor to help author your XML requests. This will help you ensure that data is \ncorrectly formatted so that your calls will succeed. \n1 Not all sections of this guidance will have corresponding video timestamps. Additionally, if you view the entire video (which was created in 2020), you may encounter certain sections that are no longer relevant due to the December 2024 launch of the Test UI. Specifically, any video content related to the use of the POST /account call in Section A, as well as the use of Test API calls to simulate Connection and Share requests in Section C, should be considered outdated and superseded by the guidance in the January 2025 version of this “Testing Web Services” document. \nTesting Overview \nThe web services Test environment (base URL: [https://portfoliomanager.energystar.gov/wstest/](https://portfoliomanager.energystar.gov/wstest/) ) is designed to help you test the Portfolio Manager API prior to establishing the production instance of your integration. EPA offers a test server, with which you can exchange data via the full suite of web services. This will help you to build the correct calls and logs into your software. \nAs of December 2024 , the Test environment is accompanied by a Test version of the Portfolio Manager user interface (UI) . This allows you to develop and test your API integration using the same workflows that take place in the Live environment (for example, the initiation of Connection and Sharing requests by a Portfolio Manager user, discussed further in Testing Part C below) . \nThe first step for any organization interested in exchanging data with Portfolio Manager will be to create a test provider account.
