the AIDS virus, officials say they have yet to find an epidemicbehind bars but will extend the program by sixweeks to get a larger sample. \nSeveral regional officials of the FederalBureau of Prisons(FBoP)said they were surprisedat the low number of inmates testing positive forthe human immunodeficiency virus, which causesAIDS. \n“You could say there hasn't been any explo-sion,\"said Assistant Surgeon General RobertBrutsche, who heads the program of conductingAIDS tests on incoming and outgoing inmates atthe 47 Federal prisons. \n\"We're dealing with figures that are too lowto talk about,”Brutsche said. \nOfficials at the U.S.MedicalCenter forFederal Prisoners in Springfield,Mo.,said that asof Aug 10,there were only 15 prisoners withAIDS out of a population of about 1,000. \nBut Brutsche said such a figure was hardly anindication of the prevalence of Acquired Immune.Deficiency Syndrome in U.S.prisons. \nPrisoners are sent to Springfield only whenthey have infections based on“full-blown AIDScases,\"he said.Inmates testing positive for theAIDS virus but not showing symptoms of the dis-ease are kept in regular prisons. \n(See AIDS,page five.) \nSeptember 2,1987
