The text evaluates claims of pre-Columbian western hemisphere visits, arguing that earlier traditions are too vague for rigorous historical criticism. It reviews Cabot’s 1497 discovery, subsequent Portuguese exploration, and later expeditions, detailing voyages, routes, encounters with ice, and contested evidence relevant to Church,Bristol,England \nTHE AVANT COURIERS OF COLONIZATION \nBY HON.JAMES PHINNEY BAXTER,PRESIDENT OF THE SOCIETY \nA paper read on November 19,1903,before the Maine HistoricalSociety at a meeting commemorative of the tercentenary ofMartin Pring's first voyage to America \nHow long before the discoveries of Columbus andCabot the western hemisphere had been visited byadventurers from other parts of the world will everbe a matter of speculation.Traditions of prior dis-coveries therein have engaged the attention and sup-port of ingenious writers, but they are too vague tostand the test of historical criticism.Such are thealleged discoveries by Phænicians, perhaps the mostdaring navigators of antiquity,of Jews,Chinese,Irish,Scandinavians and Welsh.Even the discov-eries so generally believed to have been made by theNorsemen in the tenth century, although the sagaswhich describe them bear internal evidences of truth, cannot be properly regarded as history. \nThe first known discovery of the North Americancontinent was made by John Cabot on June 24,1497.Even Cabot's landfall and the extent of his discov-eries are matters of controversy. He was followedin the spring of 1500 by the Cortereal brothers, \n15 \nGaspar and Miguel, who penetrated the waters whichwash the shores of Labrador, but encountering icemade a brief survey of the coast and returned to Lis-bon in the autumn of 1500. \nIn the spring of 1501,Gaspar again set sail for theNew World with three ships, and striking the coastsouth of his former landfall,he followed it northerlyfor several hundred miles, when encountering ice heturned back and skirted the coast toward the south.A bit of a sword and silver earrings of Europeanmanufacture, supposed relics of Cabot's visit, werediscovered in possession of the natives, who were sounsuspicious of strangers that fifty-seven of them weermade prisoners, probably by enticing them on boardhis vessels. An eminent authority supposes thesepeople to have been captured on the coast of Maine.Setting sail without their commander two of his shipsreached Lisbon in safety.Miguel, after watching invain for the return of his brother, set out with threeships on the 10th of May,1502,to seek him, andsafely reaching the American coast, began a carefulsearch for the missing ship.Finding the rivers andinlets numerous,he divided his fleet so as to makehis search more effective, arranging a rendezvous forthe 20th of August. Two of the vessels met at theappointed time and place and awaited the arrival ofthe other bearing their commander, but he did notappear, and weary with waiting, they returned toLisbon without him. When another spring returned, the king dispatched an expedition in search of the \n4 201l
