happiness to be /Unknown,obscureand like a tree.\"In fact,I'm not sure that trees are as obscure ashe imagined. They line up on horizons and gather in parks andby rivers, their stateliness commanding our attention and respect, and reminding us of the briefness of our own lives. They alsoremind us of different kinds of art;in winter they are sculptures,in summer something more like music. \nThese ten poems are only a small offering from the vast forestof poems about trees.I am aware of omitting one or two \ncanonical examples(such as Housman's loveliest cherry)but wasmotivated by a desire to introduce some lesser known poems andto encourage readers to venture off the beaten track. \nThe starting point for our little arboretum is DHLawrence'srhapsodic celebration of the colours of the trees in his garden.Green overrides all,but his darting poet's eye notices the pinksand the whites and the blues, and the elder's graceful 'foam’.Elsewhere,we encounter an errant soul escaped from a fallentree and carried off into the world inside a human body, orwe shin up a trunk and don't want to come down. For EdwardThomas, looking at aspens shivering in the breeze is almost tobecome a tree himself. \nOf course,we must acknowledge that we are losing our trees-todiseases such as ash die-back or to urban sprawl and inner cityhusbandry.Gerard Manley Hopkins'poem 'Binsey Poplars'stands for every lament for a lost tree, just as Alistair Elliot'selegiac 'Dear Betula'speaks for all those who love trees andhope never to be parted from them. \n# Katharine Towers\n\nTrees in the Garden \nAh
