The text describes how this 1982 Dover edition builds from earlier Dover and Kamin Dance Publishers versions, adding more than 300 new alphabetized terms and updating illustrations. It also highlights the new Pronunciation Guide and Bibliography in the Dover editions, and outlines three major schools of technique—Italian (Cecchetti), French, and Russian—with cross-referenced names and distinct terminological differences.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/literature/","Literature",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/technical-manual-and-dictionary-of-classical-ballet-third-revised-edition/489991/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/technical-manual-and-dictionary-of-classical-ballet-third-revised-edition/489991.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Bulrr","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-22","2026-10-01",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",12,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What distinguishes the third revised edition of the ballet dictionary?","Question",{"text":63,"@type":64},"The third revised edition is a completely revised 1982 Dover publication that adds over 300 new terms, alphabetized into the text, and includes updated features such as the Pronunciation Guide and Bibliography.","Answer",{"name":66,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":67},"How do the Italian, French, and Russian ballet technique schools relate to classical principles?",{"text":68,"@type":64},"All three schools share fundamental principles of classical technique, but certain steps, exercises, poses, and movements are performed differently and use different names for similar elements; That 1967 version was itself a thoroughly revised republication, with regard to both text and illustrations, of the work first published by Kamin Dance Publishers, New York, in 1950. The Prefaces to the Second and Third Editions, the Pronunciation Guide and the Bibliography are completely new features of the Dover editions. \nInternational Standard Book Number \nISBN-13: 978-0-486-21843-4 \nISBN-10: 0-486-21843-0 \nLibrary of Congress Catalog Card Number: 67-26481 \nManufactured in the United States by Courier Corporation \n21843040 \n[www.doverpublications.com](www.doverpublications.com) \nTO W. J. R. \nPreface to the Third Edition \nThis new 1982 Dover edition of Gail Grant’s Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet has been completely revised, and over 300 new terms have been added, all of them alphabetized into the text. \nFour new books have been added to the bibliography as sources for the revisions and the additional terms. \nWALTER J. RYAN \nBoca Raton, Florida \nPreface to the Second Edition \nThe first edition of Gail Grant’s Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet was published in 1950. This new and revised 1967 Dover edition has so considerably broadened the scope of her original work that it should find even readier acceptance by students, teachers, choreographers, dance directors and balletomanes. \nAugmenting Miss Grant’s initial effort are these new and valuable adjuncts: \n1. Nearly 100 additional terms have been incorporated. \n2. All terms are now in one complete alphabetical listing, including all the newly added terms and those formerly added in an appendix. \n3. Each foreign-language term is followed by an improved phonetic aid to pronunciation which will be immediately useful even to those readers who may know little or nothing of the French and Italian languages. The general guide to this phonetic aid is to be found on page xiii. \n4. New and revised illustrations have been added. All illustrations are now located in one section of the book for ease of reference. \n5. A bibliography has been added. \n6. There are three distinct schools of ballet technique—the classic Italian (Cecchetti method), the graceful French and the strong Russian. The fundamental principles of classical technique are the same in all three. However, certain steps, exercises, poses and movements are performed indifferent ways and different names are given to similar steps and positions by these three schools. This edition has completely cross-referenced these dissimilarities and the resultant terminological deviations. The new typographic arrangement makes for effortless reading and quick references. \nBy vastly improving her original text and format, Miss Grant has fashioned a manual and dictionary that has every opportunity for acceptance as the official textbook of classical ballet for all dance associations andinstitutions. \nWALTER J.
