how teachers can help themlearn—the meanings of new words.Learning new words is foundational tosuccess in school.Researchers have known for years that how many wordmeanings a student knows is one of the single strongest predictors of howwell that student will understand text.Knowing the meanings of words, andbeing able to use them,is essential for effective writing. As well, knowingthe concepts in a domain is intimately tied in with knowing the words thatconvey them.Hence, having a large vocabulary is both a powerful tool for avariety of academic and life goals, and anend in itself. One of the things thateffective teachers must be able to do is support and increase the vocabularygrowth of their students. \nThus,this is a book about vocabulary instruction. Both ofus are proud tohave devoted much of our professional lives to studying how children learnwords, and how teachers can help them learn even more. However, theword vocabulary carries with it a variety of images and connotations, someof which have little to do with the goals of this book. That's one of the rea-sons we didn't use the word vocabulary in the book's title.Let us start bytelling you a few things that we're not trying to do in this book, which thisword might seem to imply. \nFirst of all,we're not primarily interested in the processes by which chil-dren develop their sight vocabularies. The phrase sight vocabulary refersto those words whose printed form the child can recognize easily andquickly.Helping childr","cbCaiefDYjEJdFzb","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiefDYjEJdFzb","pdf",1905079,24,"English","# Preface\n##
