PresidentObama's inaugural parade.  \nWhen violence robs children of their lives,andwhen it invades ourschools,which shouldalways be safe havens,the sobering effects areonly magnified.  \nWe owe it to our children and those who care for them toensure our schools and communities are safe havens.  \nMedal the sixeducators who perished.I thinkabout the teacher who sheltered her studentsin a closet with only her body and a thin doorbetween them and the shooter.And of theteacher and guidance counselor who in an-other school shooting in January bravelytalked an armed student into putting hisweapon down.That'swho teachers andschoolstaff are,and we owe it to our children andthose who care for them toensure ourschoolsand communities are safe havens.  \nEven those who had grown numb to theeveryday carnage were shaken bythe unthink-able murders of the most innocent of inno-cents in Newtown.Out of this tragedy mustcome real action to make our schools andcommunities safer.  \nresponsible gun owners—has vigorouslyfought virtually every attempt to reduce gunviolence.While thegunlobbymay be doublingdown,there is widespread public support formany gun safety measures,even among gunowners.
