describes initial, postgraduate and post-experience coursesin education in British universities available to students from overseas. It in-cludes entries from most universities and university-sector colleges in the UnitedKingdom involved in teacher education. \nThe Compendium is compiled and published by the Universities Council for theEducation of Teachers (UCET).The original UCET came into existence in 1967.In 1993 UCET and the Polytechnics Council for the Education of Teachers formedthe enlarged Universities Council for the Education of Teachers, which wasjoined in 1997/98 by a number of university-sector Colleges of Higher Educa-tion,some of whom now bear the title University College.Since 2000 virtuallyall Scottish universities have joined the Council. \nUCET acts as a national forum for the discussion of all matters relating to theeducation of teachers and to the study of education in universities. It makes acontribution to the formulation of policy in these fields and makes representationsto and collaborates with other groups in the United Kingdom with similar inter-ests.The Council has a number of standing committees, each with a specialconcern. For instance, the primary, secondary and post-16 committees deal withmatters concerning pre-service education and training;others deal with continu-ing professional education and research. One committee has a special responsi-bility in the field of work with students from overseas and it was on its initiativethat this Compendium was originally prepared in 1982. \nMembers of UCET hope that the handbook will be of use to students,experi-enced teachers and others seeking educational qualifications in this country.Prospectuses and further information should be requested from the individualuniversities/colleges.Websites of most of the institutions can be accessed viathe UCET website:www.ucet.ac.uk. \nThe entries in this compendium are compiled by the institutions concerned.Thework of gathering, collating and editing the information for the current editionhas been handled by Ruth Klassen,Information Manager to UCET. \nMary J RussellExecutive Director,UCET well as a highstandard of competence in the subjects they will teach before they can achieve'qualified teacher status'(QTS)and be allowed to practise in State-run schools. There are a variety of ways of obtaining QTS,two of them being the mainmethods of qualifying in the university system: \n●by taking a degree that combines the study of education with the subject orsubjects to be taught(BEd,BA,BSc) \n●by taking a specialist subject degree followed by a Postgraduate Certificatein Education(PGCE)*,normally of one year's duration. \nThe PGCE is designed specifically for graduates who are preparing to enterteaching;it concentrates on aspects of education closely related to school teachingand much of the course is spent in schools. All entrants to initial teacher trainingmust have attained in Mathematics and English Language the standard re-quired to achieve a grade C in the GCSE examination and, since
