more dry land either. The land would have lost its defining other half(though half is not the half of it). We'd just have all-one-world,which is perhapswhat Revelation had in mind. The difference between land and sea is one of thebiggest differences in the world. From space it is the big visible difference.Amongst people too,a deep division can still be felt between those who knowthe sea-and those who know it only as a supplier of seasides and sea-views,and beyond that,a place where there are worse troubles and plenty more fish. \nlan Hamilton Finlay's work knows the sea, which is a rare thing in artnowadays. It knows the land too, also rare. And to be sure,Finlay's work of thelast forty years is astonishing n many ways:in the integrity of its vision, thediversity of its forms, the abundance of its invention, its sheer range of topic andperspective.Comprehensiveness isn't something we expect of today's artistEach artist has their special, individual thing, their area of interest, theirtrademark tone or trick. But Finlay's work is classically comprehensive.I'm notonly referring to its vital historical engagements with the classical, for examplewith ancient Greek philosophy and culture,or with the ideas and events of theFrench Revolution.I mean the variety of mood and experience it embraces, andbrings into convergence. In Finlay's work you find tragic severity and idyllic \nhappiness.You find agriculture, architecture, warfare, the home, the garden, friendship, political action, the natural world, the sea.Not least, the sea.I haven'tcounted, but it seems likely that of Finlay's manifold creations -prints,poems,books,inscriptions,embroideries,neons,sculptures,permanent installationsand landscapings, including those in Little Sparta, his philosophical/poeticgarden in Lanarkshire, all usually made in collaboration with others -almosthalf have some marine element to them. \nThe Maritime Works showing in Tate St lves (and several of them are new)are only a representative selection of this theme, which is in a way Finlay'soriginal theme. The sea was the subject of his earliest printed works and hisearliest sculptures in the 1960s and 1970s.And many of his distinctive maritimemotifs are not included here. For example, there are the aircraft carrier/birdtables,such as punctuate the garden at Little Sparta.Or there's the wavy line of'waves',a word-work which has been realised in various forms and in severallanguages,in which the printer's undulating sign (to indicate a transposing oftwo letters)rolls and breaks the words- \nwaelv \nalwe wave \n1
