the hand butfull of poems so expansive that as soon as you start toread it the world and its possibilities shift. Its poemsare about -about what?Everything:about art and itsmakings, about forgiveness, kindness, about seeminglyimpossible renaissance, about the human spirit throughtime, about the odds stacked against us all,the inevitabilityof human frailty, the determination of the power-mongerers,the weight and poison of whichever closedreligious or political dogma has decided to categorise orlessen us. \nEdwin Morgan leans his poetry against the odds andtells himself, and us,in the poem called Pelagius'(andin the form of his historical namesake,Morgan, thehomegrown ancient theologian of free will who was alsoknown as Pelagius),what to do. \nMorgan,I said to myself, take note,Take heart. In a time of confusion \nYou must make a stand. There is a chrysalis \nThrobbing to disgorge oppression and pessimism,Proscription, prescription, conscription,Praying mantises.Cut them down! \nA poem about the streetsong of a blind woman revealsan unexpected fortitude'and versatility.A poem about adevastating loss of strength pivots on a hard-won fiercesalvage'in lives wrecked by everyday toughness and fragil-ity,andon theunexpectedlyjoyous form such salvage takes:I learned both love and joy in a hard school.'A poem aboutthe death of Marilyn Monroe reveals the poet's eye-and allour eyes-on the truth versus the fake dream;and the fakedream of religiosity is joyfully excoriated in this collectionin poem after poem, moment after moment of sheer liber-ation,the earthly in its pure green glory'telling the angelsto get lost and gracing human notions of the spirit with agorgeous life-love instead. \nPerseverance,'that one persisting patience of theundefeated’,as Morgan puts it,unites us,and even if theodds are as ridiculous,as flagrantly hilarious as,say, thetask the jigsaw-maker faces in ‘From the Video Box 25',thepayoff is the kick of real/miraculous transformation thatcomes with concentrated creativity. This is a discipline thatcan create worlds out of broken-up pieces, can even swaydeath,as the speaker does in 'Instructions to an Actor³,Morgan's take on Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale.Morgan'spoetry produces the kind of warmth that thaws winter eventhough we know full well how cold it is.Look at \"Trio',whose warmth and exclamation are a vision ofgenerosity, from a poet whose work unites generosity and vision, andwhose own generosity of vision can renew even cold old, clichéd old Christmas.","cbCaisxvZZPt3biD","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisxvZZPt3biD","pdf",1820975,68,"English","# Contents\n## Introduction\n# Blind\n# Cinquevalli\n# The Coals\n# The Death of Marilyn Monroe\n#
