\nPK645|8t1905v. \n# PREFACE.\n\nMysticism is so congenial to the Persian race, and its in-fluence has been so great in almost every department oftheir life and thought, that some knowledge of the historyand doctrines of the Sufís,as the Muhammadan mystics callthemselves,is absolutely indispensable to the student ofPersian literature.Apart from this general consideration, theinclusion of the Tadhkiratu 'l-Awliyá in the present Seriesseems to be justified by the fact that it is the oldest workof the kind in Persian¹and that, although deficient in datesand biographical details of any sort,it contains a largeamount of material which is not to be found in the laterBiographies or,so far as I know, anywhere else. Its valueas a source for the history of Súfiism can hardly be over-estimated.Compared with Jámí's Nafahátu '-Uns,it hasthis immense advantage, that its articles being much fewer \n6 \nin number are far more exhaustive;where Jámí gives onlya rapid sketch Attár draws a full-length picture:thus(totake three of the most important Shaykhs noticed in thisvolume)the articles on Dhu ’n-Nún,Báyazíd of Bistám,andSarí as-Saqatí,whom Jámí dismisses in six and a half pages, occupy about seventy-five in the present edition of the Tadh-kiratu '-Awliyá.One can readily perceive that without suchfullness of treatment the task of tracing the developmentof Súfi doctrine, and of determining what was contributedthereto by individual theosophists, would be extremely diffi-cult and precarious,if not altogether impracticable. From aliterary point of view, moreover, the Tadhkiratu P-Azwliyá isnot unworthy of attention as an excellent example of earlyPersian prose, plain, terse, and dignified. These characteristicsare no doubt largely due to the Arabic originals fromwhich,as Attár acknowledges, the great bulk of the work iscompiled. It has preserved many archaic forms,of which Ipropose to give a complete list in the Preface to Part II.The following are especially remarkable. \n(I)In the Past Conditional instead of the usual5(2d Person Singular), S,and s--N,s we find 33iLass,and iL3ss.The origin of these forms must be re-ferred to the Pahlaví construction of the Past Tense(whichalso occurs in some Persian dialects)¹by means of the verb-stem and the pronominal suffixes,e.g.0s世...‘thoudidst',ss ...'we did’,and so on.In the forms whichwe are now considering the pronominal suffix is attachedto the verbal stem—not,as is generally the case in Pahlaví,to some preceding word—and the cs,+*~ is appended. The forms in iLa are by far the commonest and appear","cbCaieEgZsdQXGPS","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieEgZsdQXGPS","pdf",21382200,460,"English","# Preface\n## Purpose and scope of the series\n## Value as a source for Sufi history\n## Comparison
