If \nthere is onetlling that wjll give parents ease of mind when sending their children to school, it is the certainty that bullies are yesterday's problem. Unfortunately, it is not, especially in boarding schools. But parents have received aw􀂨lcome double dose of good news, firstly, with the latest government pronouncement that closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera coverage will be extended to 333 boarding schools this year, thus ensuring 24-hour monitoring and surveillance against violence perpetrated by students on their peers. The additional good news is that former military personnel will be hired as full-time. wardens in all 58 Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM) from next year to curb bullyjng and other discipline issues in college hostels. This follows from the success ofa pilot project at MRSMBesut and MRSM Balik Pulau, where bullying cases dropped to nearly zero after former military personnel were deployed. \nThese encouraging developments are not isolated moves \nStudents also \nneed safe channels to report bullying without fear of retribution. \nbut point to the prioritisation of . safety in schools as an institutional issue requiring all-out efforts aimed at prevention, supervision, deterrence and early intervention. While CCTV monitoring obviously helps, there isnothing like the physfcal presence of dedicated wardens to provide what technology alone cannot. \nThese personnel can spot ten \nsions before they get out of control and intervene early. Mere monitoring to ensure tensions do not boil over into violent incidents isnot enough. Prevention is always better than cure and the only way to identify warning signs and discourage misconduct before it escalates is often tru:ough the presence of minders. Technology complements but cannot replace human supervision. CCTVs are only useful if footage is properly and constantly monitored, incidents are acted upon quickly and any blind spots are immediately addressed. \nUnfortunately, discipline matters also cannot be solved by a tough, on-site presence alone. Bullying has morphed from physical abuse to verbal, psychological and even digital abuse. Vigilance and supervision have to be accordingly all encompassing as well. The wider lesson is accountabi11ty. Parents must be confident complaints will be heard, investigated promptly and appropriate action taken, while students also need safe channels to report bullying. Overalt the latest moves point in a most welcome direction. More ccTv cameras and wardens are, however, not thebe-all and end-all. The government should circulate and regularly review performance indicators such as prevalence of bullying reports, repeat incidents, response times and student and parent feedback. The ultimate measure of success will be when , bullying no longer plagues schools and they become known solely as redoubts for learning and building character.","cbCaipzRuL1mRtKV","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipzRuL1mRtKV","pdf",105937,"English","# Tackling bullying in schools\n## CCTV expansion and 24-hour monitoring\n## Dedicated wardens and early intervention\n## Safe reporting and accountability\n## Ongoing performance indicators","[{\"question\":\"What government measures are described to tackle bullying in schools?\",\"answer\":\"The text cites expanded CCTV coverage for boarding schools and the hiring of former military personnel as full-time wardens in MRSM hostels.\"},{\"question\":\"Why is human supervision considered important alongside technology?\",\"answer\":\"It argues that technology cannot replace dedicated wardens who can spot tensions early and intervene before bullying escalates.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the text suggest schools should handle bullying complaints?\",\"answer\":\"Parents should be confident that complaints will be heard and investigated promptly, while students need safe channels to report bullying without fear of retribution.\"}]","Tackling the bullying scourge in schools | PDF",1790892643]
