Tachs are available from basic low-cost speed indication to an encoder-based digital tach designed for use with the latest speed and position controls.
“Just close enough” isn’t adequate anymore! An increasing number of applications require feedback to indicate exactly how fast a motor is running. Accurate process control is possible by using one of Baldor’s industrial tachometer designs.
Baldor tachometers are used in elevators, plastic extruders, printing presses, antenna drives, and many other diverse applications.
Tachs listed in this brochure with a catalog number are available from stock, or let Baldor design and manufacture a customized tach to your specifications.
Why Use Tach Feedback?
The purpose of tach feedback is to improve the drive’s regulation under varying speed and load conditions. Most SCR motor drives have a regulation spec of 1% of base speed with armature feedback. By adding a tachometer for feedback, regulation becomes 1% of set speed.

| Comparison of an 1800 RPM DC Motor Operated from an SCR Control | | | |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Armature Feedback (No tach) Regulation-1% of Base Speed | | Tachometer Feedback
Regulation-1% of Set Speed | |
| Set Speed
1800
1000
500
50 | Variation
±18 RPM
±18 RPM
±18 RPM
±18 RPM | Set Speed
1800
1000
500
50 | Variation
±18 RPM
±10 RPM
±5 RPM
±0.5 RPM |

Which tach should I specify?
For basic motor feedback to an SCR motor control, our most popular DC tach is either the PTG50XP or
PTG50XPS. This tach is rated at 50 VDC/1000 RPM. Tach adapters are available for these tachs allowing use on most of Baldor’s DC motor line. Their industry-standard PY mounting flange makes them interchangeable with many other tachometers. Baldor’s new 60V DC metric tach matches the mounting and electrical specs of popular models from Europe. These tachs are available in the standard TENV enclosure or a Washdown IP65 enclosure, from stock. Baldor does not offer an Explosion Proof tach for hazardous locations.
For best performance, the tach coupling should be an anti-backlash type. Shielded lead wire should be used with the shield, grounded only at the control (not at both ends) . Tach leads should be in separate conduit from motor power leads.
2
Tachometer Selection Guide

| Catalog
Number | Baldor
Tach
Type | Output
Volt.
V/1000
RPM | Ripple
Max.
Speed | Max.
RMS
Ripple | Temp.
Max.
Current | Reversing
Error | Cycles
Per
Rev. | Amb.
Temp
°C | Approx.
Coefficient
%Volt/°C | Temp.
Compen. | Enclos. | Housing
Material | Weight
Lbs. | Inertia
(lb-in2) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| PTG50XP
PTG100XP | XPY | 50
100
200 | 5000
2500
1250 | 0.5% | 400 mA
200 mA | 2% | 52 | 40 | 0.022 | No | TENV
IP54 | Aluminum
& Steel | 5 | 0.93 |
| PTG50XPS
PTG60XPS-M
PTG100XPS | XPY-II | 50
60
100 | 5000
4166
2500 | 0.35 | 100 mA
50 mA
50 mA | 1% | 33 | 65 | 0.045 | No | TENV
IP54 | Cast Iron | 19 | 0.54 |
| PTGWD50XPS
PTGWD100XPS | XPY-II | 50
100 | 5000
2500 | 0.35 | 100 mA
50 mA | 1% | 33 | 65 | 0.045 | No | TENV
IP65 | Cast Iron | 19 | 0.54 |
| PFTG4250XC
PTFG42100X | XC42 | 50
100
200 | 5000
2500
1250 | 0.5% | 1.0 A
0.5 A | 2% | 48 | 65 | 0.012 | Yes | TENV
IP54 | Cast Iron
& Steel | 25 | 6.47 |
| PFTG4650XC
PFTG46100X | XC46 | 50
100
200 | 5000
2500
1250 | 0.5% | 2.0 A
1.0 A | 2% | 48 | 65 | 0.012 | Yes | TENV
IP54 | Cast Iron
& Steel | 35 | 9.90 |
| BTG1000 | 30-AFL-0 | 50 | 5000 | 8.0% | | 2% | 24 | 40 | 0.2 | Yes | TENV
IP54 | Aluminum | 6 | |
| PTG1024LD | DPY | 240 PPR
500 PPR
1000 PPR
1024 PPR | 5000
5000
5000
5000 | | | | | | | | TENV
IP54 | Aluminum | 1 ","cbCaipGKLaNlCUQi","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipGKLaNlCUQi","pdf",644574,"English","# Why Use Tach Feedback?
## Tach Feedback for Accurate Regulation
# Which Tach Should I Specify?
## Recommended Adapters and Mounting
## Installation and Wiring Guidance
# Tachometer Selection Guide
## Catalog Number Specifications Table
# XPY DC Tachometer Generator
## Chart and Features","[{"question":"Why is tach feedback used in motor drive regulation?","answer":"Tach feedback improves the drive’s regulation when speed and load vary.
