shouts, the first tears, thesoft touches and the mystical feelings that everyman experiences throughout his life. The writtenhaiku,a genre taken from the Japanese whichwas originally the first three lines of a tanka, hasbecome an art form used and admired throughoutthe world. The hokku,or three line, seventeen syl-lable starting section of the tanka, which has fivelines, was used as a literary game between twopeople and eventually became popular in itself.Today,it is correctly known as haiku. \nBasho,who died in 1694,was probably thegreatest writer of haiku to date.He was also theone who crystallized its style while perpetuatinghis Zen philosophies in his verse. \nAnd so it is today,as it was with the sonnet, which after coming from the Italian was immort-alized by writers of English. The five-syllable,seven-syllable,five-syllable,three-lined-poem hasbecome a means for today's writers of English todepict and capture the essence of the most subtlehappenings in the world about us. \nThe haiku has become a tool with which onemay enter into a soul.It is the tool with whichone captures the Grace of God and shares it withhis fellow beings. It is a medium which, althoughpetite in structure, can support a universe filledwith desirable love. \nThese values are the notes of the compositionwhich we form into the symphony of our lives. When they are captured in a haiku, they may besung time and time again without the fear of everagain losing one of Nature's fleeting moments. \n2015
