Near the rocks.’ And then: ‘It will be easier this way, you’ll \nsee.’ \nOn the phone he heard the static, loud and soft, rising and falling. He finally understood the source of the noise. It was ocean crashing against the shore. ‘Better like what? What do you mean?’ But, inside, he already knew the answer. A sick feeling grew, and he felt a wave of nausea sweep over him. He said weakly: ‘Katherine, what are you doing?’ \n‘I love you, Timothy. Everything will be okay. You’ll see.’‘Katherine, wait—’ \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nPrologue \nLater, standing over the dead girl’s body, the detective decided it made perfect sense. The case wrapped itself up neatly – in a bow, he would explain, to anyone who cared to ask. It was a simple story: about a rich man who had everything, but wanted more; a story about what happens to people who try to break the rules. \nThe dead girl lay in the kitchen of the rich man’s house, her skull crushed by a marble sculpture. Blood had drained from her corpse and gathered in a weird pool near her head, shaped like a cartoon dialog bubble emanating from her mouth, as if she was saying something big and important and red. But her eyes were vacant, and she was dead, and the detective concluded it was unlikely she would say anything important again. \nA uniformed cop joined the detective and looked down at the girl. \n‘Pretty,’ the uniform said. The girl was wearing a black cocktail dress, and even though a patch of skull was visible behind her ear, she was still obviously beautiful. \n‘Anything?’ the detective asked. \n‘Three wine glasses in the sink. Three sets of dishes. They ate steak, and what’s that stuff called? The green leaf that people eat?’ \n‘Lettuce.’ \n‘Arugula,’ the uniform said, as if he had known the answer all along.‘Steak with arugula leaves. That’s what they ate.’ \nThe detective stared at the bloody footprints on the floor – a single set, aman’s. Near the girl’s body a swab of red looked like a knee-print. The detective tried to make sense of it. Maybe the rich man killed her in a fit of passion, and then regretted it, so kneeled down next to her to whisper that he was sorry. Not an easy conversation, probably. \nThe detective’s suit jacket began to play Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture. He reached inside, pulled out his cell phone and flipped it open. \n‘You find him?’ the detective asked. \nThe voice on the other end was tinny, washed in static, barely audible. \n‘Only his car,’the voice said.‘Black BMW, right?’ \n‘Where are you?’ \n‘Wells. Mule Canyon.’ \n‘Same cliff as his wife?’ \n‘Yes.’ \n‘And him?’ \n‘Still looking.’ \n‘I’ll come down. Give me a couple hours.’ \nThe detective closed the phone and dropped it into his pocket. He turned to the uniform.‘They found his BMW. His body can’t be far.’ \nThe uniform nodded. ‘Then that’s two.’ He paused, waited for the detective to respond. When he didn’t, the uniform said: ‘Three sets of dishes. Three wine glasses. Him and the girl—’ He indicated the dead woman in the cockta","cbCaioNMZmMcYB5C","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaioNMZmMcYB5C","pdf",1615087,4,292,"English","en",105,"# Prologue\n## Chapter 1\n## Chapter 2\n## Chapter 3\n## Chapter 4\n## Chapter 5\n## Chapter 6\n## Chapter 7\n## Chapter 8\n## Chapter 9\n## Chapter 10\n## Chapter 11\n## Chapter 12\n## Chapter 13\n## Chapter 14\n## Chapter 15\n## Chapter 16\n## Chapter 17\n## Chapter 18\n## Chapter 19\n## Chapter 20\n## Chapter 21\n## Chapter 22\n## Chapter 23\n## Chapter 24\n## Chapter 25\n## Chapter 26\n## Chapter 27\n## Chapter 28\n## Chapter 29\n## Chapter 30\n## Chapter 31\n## Chapter 32\n## Chapter 33\n## Chapter 34\n## Chapter 35\n## Chapter 36\n## Chapter 37\n## Chapter 38\n## Chapter 39\n## Chapter 40\n## Chapter 41\n## Chapter 42\n## Chapter 43\n## Chapter 44\n## Chapter 45\n## Chapter 46\n## Chapter 47\n## Chapter 48\n## Chapter 49\n## Chapter 50\n## Chapter 51\n## Chapter 52\n## Chapter 53\n## Afterward","[{\"question\":\"What does the prologue introduce in the case?\",\"answer\":\"The prologue opens with a detective inspecting a dead girl in the rich man’s kitchen, tying the scene to a larger, rule-breaking pattern and an unfolding search for the associated man.\"},{\"question\":\"How does Timothy Van Bender learn he has lost $24 million?\",\"answer\":\"He learns it at 9:30 on a Thursday morning when the Kid appears at his doorway pale and desperate, interrupting Timothy’s usual coffee routine.\"},{\"question\":\"What locations and clues connect the investigations?\",\"answer\":\"The detective’s calls and discussions reference Big Sur areas and cliff-linked locations, while the scene includes details like the kitchen setting and physical traces meant to be interpreted.\"}]","Switchback -
