don't want//to read,\"Berwyn Moorecautions us,but read it we do,along with the other seasonalprofundities offered up in her engaging third book of poetry SweetHerbaceous Miracle. \nMoore is an accomplished poet with striking verbal facility whosepoems offer the usual pleasures of language that poetry provides.Buthow she perceives the world, her sensibility,is another attractionfor her readers. For hers is a mind attentive to the small and largedetail,to the observation that resonates far beyond the boundariesof the poem.On a basic level, she demonstrates a way to be in theworld. One could even say her outlook is admirable. \nMoore's poems occur in a natural world that is exactingly andlushly observed and where no human gesture is without significance. The poems are formal, written either in received forms—most oftensonnets—or in graceful and effective nonce forms. She is especiallyfond of unrhymed couplets, the default form in the book.Moore'smusic is compelling, the phrasing precise and economic,as in theselines from \"A Reprimandof Crows”:“You wake tonew snow/branchesbowing//under the weight,yard/and cobbled street quiet//undera creamy skin,/not yet ravaged by track//or tire.” \nHer focus is divided between the plant world and the humanone. She explores both in all their promise, ripeness and rot.Frequently, the herbaceous poems are inspired by a seventeenth-century manual,Gerard's Herbal.Recounting the folkloric wisdomsurrounding borage, angelica, motherwort, artichokes, and plantains, these charming found poems display a keen sense of humor,as inthese lines about the artichoke:\"Moreover,the root,if boiled inwine/and drunk,is good against the rank//smell of the arm-holes,for it
