It outlines the appointment and membership of the Sweated Goods Committee, then frames the issue as a consequence of expanding industrialism and national competition. The report argues that cheap semi-slave labour undermines fair economic terms and imposes moral harm, linking improved labour standards abroad to protected home markets and expanding trade.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/healthcare/","Healthcare",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/sweated-imports-and-international-labour-standards-interim-report/321577/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/sweated-imports-and-international-labour-standards-interim-report/321577.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Logic","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-23","2026-09-21",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",6,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What aspeet of the problem. In a further Report we propose to deal with the“sweating”conditions within our own boundaries and with the measures whichare needed to supplement existing legislation. \nPART I. \nPAST AND PRESENT. \nTHE extension of industrialism to new parts of the world, andthe advance of industrialism in other countries,is creating a newsituation. The competition of nations already industrialized is tobe met only by superior efficiency. But greater efficieney elonewill not enable British production to compete on fair terms withenterprises drawing upon an inexhaustible supply of cheap and, itmay be,semi-slave labour. The use of such labour, lowly paidand employed under conditions long since abolished in Westerncountries,is open to grave objection on both economic and moralgrounds. From the economic point of view, the world has more togain from a rising standard of life in the countries now entering theindustrial field than from the perpetuation of low standards andsemi-slavery.Organized Labour must in its own interest striveto secure a progressive standard of life and it is obviously in the besteconomic interest of the Western nations to develop their homemarkets through the increased purchasing power of their peoples, but this higher standard of life,is imperilled by the existence ofmuch inferior standards in other competing countries. Moreover,it is to the direct advantage of exporting countries to do everythingpossible to assist to promote a higher standard of life amongst thepeoples with whom they trade, because a rising standardof life meansexpanding markets. The following table is instructive as showingthe value of the British imports per head in Australia,New Zealandand India. \n6 \nEXPORTs OF BRITISH PRODUCE AND
