I used to live in Minnesota.  \nIn America, we divide the 24-hour day into two 12-hour blocks . The first 12-hour block starts at midnight and we label AM after the time . For example, if it is 3 hours past midnight (when we should all be sleeping soundly), we would write 3 AM.  \nThe second 12-hour block starts at noon and we write it with PM. So, if it is 4 hours past noon, we would write 4 PM, which is about the time I get out of school and can play with my friends .  \nWhen my family moved to Tanzania, I met Juma who told me that Tanzanians tell time differently. When I eat breakfast at 7 AM in the morning, Juma says that it’s 1 in the morning to him .  \n“You see, Jessica. Like you, we Tanzanians break the 24-hour day into two 12-hour periods . But, we Tanzanians start telling time from sunrise, which is 6 AM your time . At sunrise, we can see daylight, so it makes sense for us to start there . \"  \nI told Juma that my first class at school starts at 8 AM, and he says that is 2 in the morning for him .  \nAt 10:45 AM, I have a morning break where I can geta snack. That’s 4:45 in the morning for Juma.  \nWhen I eat lunch, it’s 1 PM to me and 7 in the afternoon to Juma.  \nI wonder if there is a way for me to convert my time to the local time in Tanzania. I think back to our time difference .  \nIf I eat breakfast at 7 AM, that’s 1 in the morning Swahili time . I notice that there is a time difference of 6 hours .  \nMy class starts at 8 AM, which is 2 in the morning Swahili time . That’s also a difference of 6 hours .  \nI wonder if I were to subtract 6 hours from my time, I would get the local Swahili time .  \nWhen I eat lunch, it’s 1 PM. But if I subtract 6 hours from 1 PM, I will get a negative number, so that doesn’t work.  \n1-6 = -5 Hmm?  \nJuma says it should be 7 in the afternoon. However, I noticed that I can add 6 hours to 1 PM to get 7 in the afternoon local time .  \n1 + 6 = 7 That is correct!  \nSo now I think that to change the 12-hour clock to Swahili time, I can either add or subtract 6.  \nI told Juma that I get home from school at 4 PM. So if I add 6 to 4 PM, I get 10 in the afternoon.
