What sort of work do you do? Specialize in female pelvic health to include bladder dysfunction, urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapse reconstructive surgery, pelvic pain, and female sexual health  \n2. What do you like about your job? Empowering women through education about their bodies and their health.  \n3. How did you choose your career path? I always enjoyed the sciences and medicine. However, I took a circuitous route to get to where I am now. After trying out a few other things post graduation, I returned to my initial ideas about a career in medicine. It was my love for surgery that drew me back. And I have always been passionate about women’s issues, so a career in female urological surgery became a natural fit.  \n4. How did Saint Ben's prepare you for life after graduation and/or prepare you for your career? My experience at St Ben’s taught me the importance of balance for a well-rounded, healthy life. Maintaining balance helps me to maintain perspective, even while striving for seemingly daunting goals.  \n5. What do you miss about Saint Ben's? I miss the daily connection with dear friends.  \n6. Favorite Professors? Otmar Drekonja (German – Passion for bi-cultural life), Bella Petheo (Art History – Fabulous artist and historian), Tom Darnall (Theatre – A master at guiding students through self-reflection and exploration), John Merkle (Theology – Opened my eyes to the joys of critical theological thinking), Norman Ford (Biology-Comparative vertebrate anatomy – Bird watching at the crack of dawn), Christopher Henry (Biology-Who knew biochemistry could be so much fun?),  \n7. If you could reconnect with someone from the Monastery – who would it be and why? Sr. Margareta Nathe, OSB. I was a Koenigstein, Germany study abroad participant (Fall 1982) .  \n8. Where did you study abroad? Koenigstein, Germany (Fall 1982)  \n9. Where did you live as a first year student? Lourdes, which is now housing for the monastery.  \n10. Have you read any good books lately? Books (non-urological) I enjoyed over the last year: Bernhard Schlink: The Reader (just re-read this in anticipation of the movie – coming soon, Jan 2009)  \nUrsula Hegi: Floating in my mother’s palm  \nC. What is your favorite movie? That’s a hard one … so many great movies over the years. The one that comes to mind, and that had me emotionally moved for days afterwards, was Brokeback Mountain.  \n12. Any Hobbies? Favorite things to do: Travel to experience different cultures, art museums, theatre (both drama and musicals), play with my daughter, Moira (born 9/20/07)  \n13. Other? Read, knit, walking with friends  \nOne of the main reasons Suzette Sutherland decided to specialize in female urology and pelvic health was her true passion for empowering women through education about their bodies and health. Suzette stresses to women that they need to realize the impact their own personal health has on the well-being of their families and broader communities. “As women, we are natural nurturers and caretakers; we are hard-wired to take care of others. But we can’t play those important roles in our families and communities unless we maintain our own personal health. Women need to maintain some semblance of balance--physical, mental, spiritual and social--in order to be in a better position to take care of others.
