She was starting at university in the city, and she was excited about all the new things she would see and learn, and all the new friends she would make. Only one more night to sleep in her family home. And then the new chapter in her life would begin!  \nEarly the next morning, Susan hugged each member of her family goodbye, and then climbed on board  \nFinally, the PMV pulled into the town bus stop, and her cousin Henry was there waiting for her. How good it was to see him again! Susan hadn’t seen any of the four cousins for many years, since she was much younger. Now she was 18, and Henry was 19.  \nHenry welcomed her to town, and happily took her bags, because they were  \n3 quite heavy and she couldn’t  \n4  \nSusan slept in the same room as her younger girl cousins, and helped with the household chores. She gave her aunt some money each month for her food because she ate all her meals with them.  \nBut the family had a rule that betel nut was not allowed to be chewed in their house  \nor yard. Susan had never thought much  \nMeanwhile, at the university, it was all rather overwhelming at first!  \nOn the first morning, Henry stayed with her as she registered and bought books and other supplies, making sure she wasn’t confused by all the new things.  \nAfter that first day, Henry walked with her to the university each morning, and always waved hello when he saw her during the day. He also introduced her to quite a few of the girls he knew, so she soon  \n5 developed some good friendships with  \nHenry also introduced her to his best friend, a fellow named Nathan. As Nathan shook her hand, and asked about her trip in from the village, Susan was immediately impressed. He spoke very well, stood straight, was very goodlooking, and was polite and considerate. Wow! She thought that he was certainly worth getting to know better!  \n6 But for now, she was too  \n7  \nOne day, Susan was sitting on a cement wall at the university, while she waited for a classmate to arrive. She enjoyed the cool breeze, and she started thinking about Nathan.  \nShe had seen him several times and he had always been cheerful and polite. He had helped her carry some books one day, and on another occasion, he had picked up somethings she had dropped. He always asked how she was managing with her classes, and had complimented her blouse once. He had told  \n8  \nBut she noticed that he didn’t always return her smile. He was very popular with all the other girls, and they all talked freely with him about things.  \nBut any time that she tried to talk seriously to him about anything, he was polite, but he didn’t seem interested in chatting with her, or getting to know her better.  \nOne afternoon, Susan was brave enough to ask Nathan if  \n9  \nSo that weekend, Susan went with her uncle’s family to the river, but without Nathan.  \nIt was a beautiful, scenic spot with rocks, lots of shady trees, and a splashing waterfall.  \nEveryone had a great time soaking in the cool water and throwing a ball to eachother. The cousins thoroughly enjoyed climbing a tree and jumping into the water.
