circumscribe the wholeof modern painting. It would be hardly less erroneous, however, toconfine it to paintings of the Surrealist school without bearing in mindthat ts aims have found a purer and clearer expression in poetry, andpossibly even in films.· \nFor the Surrealist programme was not concerned merely withaesthetics. It was a comprehensive attempt to create a new attitudetowards life,a new pattern ofexistence,a corrected vision of the world, which manifested itself mainly in writing.Within the Surrealist trendor movement, painting in fact played a solitary and even a minorpart. The reason for this is that Surrealism was essentially a literarymovement, and,at bottom, not even wholly that.It was a revolutionaryevent in the ideological history of our century which used the mediaof literature, philosophy and journalism, and every kind of publicexpression, including painting, but including also graphic art,photo-graphy,the cinema.Surrealist painting, therefore, took a comparativelymodest place.Indeed,it won esteem merely on the strength of a fewartists of genius, not because it created its own vision or added sub-stantially to the programme evolved by the movement as a whole. Its impulse sprang from writing, from the cerebrations of others thanpainters. This introduction, therefore, must deal with the phenomenonof Surrealism as a whole, and use its painting by way of illustration. \nSurrealism differs fundamentally from all other artistic movementsof our time in that it springs from a much wider context and stakes anall-cmbracing claim.Expressionist painting developed quite apart fromliterary Expressionism in some isolated groups of painters(\"Der blaueReiter”,\"Die Brücke\")and in individual artists.Cubism was pre-dominantly and intrinsically a school of painting which initiated,or wasaccompanied by,parallel trends in prose, poetry, and architecture.Exponents of Surrealism, however, far more than those of Expressionism, claimed for themselves a total transformation of life.As distinct fromImpressionists,Fauves, and abstract artists, they propounded a Surrealist \n“way of existence”.From this it may be seen that, loudly proclaimedthough it has been,Surealism has dwelt merely on the fringe of modernart. Its attitude towards life, however, was clearly foreshadowed inearlier centuries. \nToday,Surrealism must be judged in relation to its time.It is unthink-able without war.Indeed,it first arose as a reaction to the futility ofthe First World War.In 1916 a few poets, painters, and composersexiled in Zurich had founded the Cabaret Voltaire and issued a numberof publications under the title of Dada—the rocking horse. The wordsounds like a baby's babbling.\"We derided simply everything, nothingwas sacred to us,we spat on it all:that was Dada.It was neitherMysticism nor Communism nor Anarchism. All these ‘isms'had somesort of a programme. We,however, were purely, completely Nihilist, and our symbol was the null and void, the vacuum, the hole.”Thusthe painter George Grosz, who belonged to the Berlin Dada group. \nSimilar publications appeared in Paris where young artists and writershad declared themselves to be“moderns”utterly opposed to any kindof tradition, defining their programme as modernness as such, the newspirit, the poetical experiment at any price,a sort of literary va banque, the eternal surprise.Their driving force was the poet GuillaumeApollinaire, who in 1917,in one of his letters, coined the term\"Surrealism\".Among the in","cbCaisIxkzL224TL","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisIxkzL224TL","pdf",2511090,72,"English","#
