Wood, \nMD, FACS, FRCSEd The Henry N. Harkins Professor & Chair \nW e lcome to the summe r issue of \nSurgery Synopsis . We typically showcase o u r ed ucatio n p rograms i n this issue . In the Spring 2025 issue we desc r ibed the prog ra m ’s matc h results . In this issue , we focus on w ho these trainees are, and we honor and celebrate our graduating residents and fellows . \nWe re main extraordinarily proud of o u r Ed ucatio n Divisio n–the p rogram directors, associate program directors, p rogram coo rdinato rs , and educatio n \nstaff under the leadership of Dr. Jeff Friedrich, our vice chair of education . This group leads our education efforts and continues to make our education programs successful . Ou r showcased and celebrated education programs are o n ly successful because they are well-supported by our superb education administrative leadership and staff and would not be what they are without the close partnership between fac ulty education leade rs and education administ rativestaff. \nI have been struck by the ph rase I’ve heard recently“Collaboration is a Force Multiplie r.” A n example of our department making collaboration a force multiplier is the launch of the Maternal Fetal Surgery Program . I believe collaboration starts with observing a need, realizi ng that the re needs to be more than one pe rson, a tea m– perhaps a multispecialty team–taking collective action to add ress a complex healthcare p ro blem . Collabo ratio ni nvolves cooperation, communication, trust, respect, and understanding with an interdependent team to solve problems . \nThe collaborative culture in our departme nt and across UW Medicine is a great stre ngth . We exist in a thriving envi ronment of i nterdiscipli nary collaboration . I am convinced that these partnership s in how we work together is an important path through the difficult financial and policy landscape we are experiencing at present . \nS U RG E RY SY NO P S IS S U M M E R 2 0 2 5 PAG E 1 \nFeatures \nCHAIR'S MESSAGE ....................................................... 1 \nEDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS \nPediatric Surgery Fellowship ................................................ 4 \nGeneral Surgery Chief Resident Administrative Roles ............. 5 \n2025-26 Chief Residents....................................................... 7 \nWelcome 2025-26 Residents ............................................... 11 \nWelcome 2025-26 Fellows .................................................. 12 \nNew Residents Highlights ................................................... 13 \n2025 Chief Residents’ Graduation Dinner ............................ 18 \nFEATURES \nSeattle Children’s Hospital: Leading The Next Frontier in Maternal and Neonatal Surgery .......................... 20 \nGetting To Know DoS \nDr. Mary Austin ........................................................... 22 \nDr. Erika Bisgaard ........................................................ 32 \nDiversity in DoS ................................................................ 26 \nHarkins Corner .................................................................. 28 \nResearch Highlight F eature \nTracking What Really Matters: \nEarly Steps in Plastic Surgery Data Innovation .......................................................... 30 \nDr. Christopher Childers Investigates the RVU System ........................................ 31 \nEvent F eatures \n76th Alfred A.
