For example, quadratic functions can present several challenges for many students, due to the potential for cognitive overload and math anxiety, as students are expected to complete algebra problems with the many steps, complex layers, and abstract relationships inherent in working with quadratic functions. We present some challenging situations and potential teaching strategies for quadratic function problems from the perspective of a special education teacher with many years of success in schools. \nKeywords: quadratic functions, struggling learners, math anxiety, cognitive load, working memory, cognitive offloading, algebra 1 instruction \nComputational Barriers in algeBra 1 \nWhen engaging with Algebra 1 content, students need to develop proficiency with the computational aspects of solving Algebra 1 problems. While learning the crucial building blocks of functions and related concepts, students may struggle when they are having trouble sorting through complex computations (e.g., multi-step equations), which can lead to a lot of anxiety for students and impede their progress toward developing a strong understanding of different types of functions as they move to higher levels of mathematics (Barroso et al., 2021; Clements & Sarama, 2004; Confrey et al., 2012) . One barrier for some students, and a necessary focal point for their teachers, is quadratic functions and the lengthy and, at this point in their learning trajectory, relatively complicated computations that students need to complete with this problem type. Quadratic functions are a foundational algebraic concept necessary to understanding calculus and higher-level mathematics (Wilkie, 2024). Students can find themselves in situations where they are looking at an equation they are trying to solve and find themselves overwhelmed seeing the work on their paper that may feel cluttered, disorganized, and confusing, which can lead to feelings of anxiety and a lack of confidence (Hord et al., 2018). These multi-step problems often involve complicated procedures and concepts that are unfamiliar and quite difficult at the student’s level of understanding in Algebra 1 courses. These situations are a “perfect storm” for students to get overwhelmed from a cognitive standpoint (e.g., cognitive overload), and these problems can be compounded by increases in students’ anxiety (Ashcraft & Krause, 2007; Barrouillet et al., 2007; Kee","cbCaibaDWjCaT0yJ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibaDWjCaT0yJ","pdf",148195,11,"English","# Supporting Struggling Learners With Quadratic Functions\n## Computational Barriers in Algebra 1\n## Multi-step Equations and Difficulties Some Students May Have\n## Offloading and Organizing Information on Paper","[{\"question\":\"Why do quadratic function problems create difficulties for struggling learners in Algebra 1?\",\"answer\":\"Quadratic function problems often involve lengthy, multi-step computations and abstract relationships that can overwhelm students, increasing cognitive load and math anxiety.\"},{\"question\":\"How can anxiety affect students while solving multi-step quadratic equations?\",\"answer\":\"Anxiety can lead to a fear-of-failure cycle, reducing attentional focus on the steps needed to solve the equation and causing students to struggle to proceed one step at a time.\"},{\"question\":\"What instructional strategies does the article emphasize for teaching quadratic function computations?\",\"answer\":\"The article emphasizes cognitive offloading and strategic organization of scratch work on paper, helping students reduce reliance on mental math and think critically through the problem-solving process step by step.\"}]","Supporting Struggling Learners With Quadratic Functions - Practical Strategies for Quadratic Function Computations | PDF",28]
