Reading aloud is one of the most common instructional activities aimed at fostering oral language skills. It plays a vital role in supporting multilingual or emergent bilingual learners’ oral language learning development. Through this article, the authors wish to inform teachers of important theoretical and practical elements influencing the practice of reading aloud in multilingual classrooms. This article shares typical speech production stages of emergent bilingual learners, characteristics of quality children’s literature, and discusses six factors influencing language development, including comprehensible input, comprehensible output, stretched language, negotiation of meaning, models of appropriate language, and a well-developed mother tongue. The authors recommend multiple quality children’s books to guide teachers in drawing on these concepts to support their young learners’ language development. This article helps teachers become better equipped to choose children’s literature that is engaging, reflective of the students they teach, and supportive of language development. \n4 \nORTESOL Journal, Volume 42, 2025 \nKey Words emergent bilingual learners, children’s literature, quality children’s books, oral language development, speech production stages, read aloud, diversity \nIntroduction \nEarly childhood is an essential time for language development. Young children who are developing language in a typical manner, learn to use oral language to express their ideas, inquire about the world around them, and develop their identities. Educators help support this language development through instructional activities such as shared reading aloud (Cabell et al., 2019) . Such shared read-aloud activities support oral language development, and accompanied by language-focused instruction, may have an even more profound effect on the oral language development of emergent bilingual children (Pollard-Durodola et al., 2006). Educators typically have some favorite texts to read aloud to children, and enjoy those texts because of the visible enjoyment of the children who are being read to. Because of the prevalence and potential impact on bilingual oracy, we believe teachers can benefit from guidance regarding what characterizes quality children’s literature and how the role that literature may play in supporting language development in emergent bilingual children. In this article, we will share characteristics of quality children’s literature, discuss the factors influencing language development, and discuss how teachers can draw on those concepts to support their bilingual young learners' language development. \nWhat Makes Quality Children’s Literature? \nScholars provided multiple recommendations for selecting quality and diverse children’s literature (Giorgis, 2024; Myers & Bersani, 2008; Walker & Salvadore, n.d.) . These articles highlight three characteristics of quality children’s literature. The first \n5 \nORTESOL Journal, Volume 42, 2025 \ncharacteristic is quality illustrations. Children who are emergent bilingual learners rely heavily on illustrations to comprehend texts. Looking for children’s books with strong text-and-illustration coherence is the first step when evaluating the quality of illustrations. Teachers can also examine whether the illustrations are positioned near the corresponding text so children can grasp information from the text and illustrations simultaneously while making sense of the story. Additionally, Myers and Bersani (2008) remind us to avoid choosing books with illustrations that reinforce stereotypes or illustrations that depict members of non-dominant communities in passive roles or as incapable. \nThe second ch","cbCaiv35bO3JEKkl","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiv35bO3JEKkl","pdf",862881,"English","# Introduction\n# What Makes Quality Children’s Literature?\n## Quality illustrations\n## Age-appropriate storylines and texts\n## More recent copyright dates\n# What Are The Factors Influencing Language Development?","[{\"question\":\"Why is reading aloud important for emergent bilingual learners?\",\"answer\":\"Reading aloud is a common instructional activity that supports oral language learning development.
