The foreword recounts immigration and identity pressures, touching on representation, cultural erasure, and self-directed violence as lived experience. It then describes the arrival of the stage reading project and the emotional recognition of shared archetypes, stereotypes, and the felt mechanism connecting heritage to destructive self-hatred. California, just aft the age when I was starting tocare about what people thought of me.The trauma of the immigrantexperience is layered, and the skills I needed to acquire to surviveincluded navigating through different languages and worlds at homeand at school. While l tried to maintain connections to friends in myhome country (in the pre-lnternet age)and make new ones here,Iwas always a step behind and fit in nowhere. \nAt the time there was such a dearth of Asian representation in film andmedia that I clung desperately to what was there.I'′m talking aboutShort Round from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.I didn'twant people to think that lhad a crush on him.It wasn't like THAT.Butwhenever l saw him,in the film or in a photo,I would get a tingle ofrecognition down my spine, like hey,a Chinese kid my age with anaccent can go on crazy adventures with Indiana Jones (who was,in my mind,Han Solo in disguise)! How cool is that (never mind thecolonialism and racism and sexism)?Still,Short Round alone wasn'tenough to squelch the insidiousness of the power of whiteness. As anadolescent immigrant I wanted nothing more than to be white,to beseen as white,to be indistinguishable from white.I harbored an intensebut unnamed hatred and denial of my cultural identity. \nIn the late 1990s when I was graduating from college,my days as a \ncommercial actor essentially ended after a couple months of audi-tioning for parts like “Tibetan Woman\\#2”and”Sexy Dragon Lady.”There were few opportunities for me,and it didn't seem like anyonereally cared at all about what I did.I was left to forge my own paththrough the dense jungle of NY experimental theater-which I ","cbCaitEH8rxBKxCc","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitEH8rxBKxCc","pdf",2881278,118,"English","# FOREWORD\n## Foreword by Aya
