Sheriff Prescott’s call brings investigator Taryn Dobbs to Hartsend, where decades of vanished work, salt-rusted ruins, and unsettling cleanliness collide. With no blood present and the body deliberately arranged, Taryn focuses on what can be observed without contamination, weighing every detail, including the careful binding and the pressed fern between folded hands.","SUCH TENDER LITTLE THINGS \nBy JA GALE \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCHAPTER 1 \nThe tide came in under the cannery every night and went out again and took nothing with it, because there was nothing left to take. The machines were gone. The fish were gone. The men who had gutted the fish for forty years were dead now, or in Portland, which in Hartsend amounted to the same thing. What remained was a long tin shed on rotten pilings, and fog, and the smell of old brine that had gone into the wood so deep it would outlast the wood. \nSofia Reyes lay on the gutting table in the middle of the floor. \nShe had been washed. Someone had done it slowly. Her dark hair was combed back from her face and had dried in soft waves, the way hair dries when a person has the whole night and does not hurry. Her hands were folded on her breastbone, wrist crossed over wrist, and bound there with a length of pale ribbon so the fingers pointed up toward her chin like a woman kneeling in a pew. Her mouth was closed. It had been closed with care. Tucked upright between her folded hands, where a bride might hold a single stem, was a small pressed fern, brown at the feathered edges, flat as a thing kept in a book. \nShe looked like she was sleeping. That was the whole point. Whoever had left her here had wanted her to look like she was sleeping, and had been patient enough to make it nearly true. \nEven the gulls kept their distance. \nTaryn Dobbs got the call at four in the morning, which was fine, because she had not been asleep. \nShe had been lying in the rented house on Ferry Street listening to the foghorn out on the point do its one long note, over and over, like an animal that had forgotten why it was calling. She'd been in Hartsend nine weeks. She had learned the sound of the horn and the sound of the rain on the flashing and the particular silence of a town that had decided, some \nyears back, to stop expecting anything good. When Debra Prescott's name came up on the phone she was already sitting on the edge of the mattress with her boots half on. \n\"You awake?\" the sheriff said. \n\"No.\" \n\"Cannery. The old Douglas one, north of the marina. Harris's on his way. Taryn.\" A pause, and Taryn heard Prescott deciding how much to say over a line. \"It's a bad one. It's staged.\" \nTaryn did not ask what that meant. She would rather see it with her own eyes than let a word like staged do its work on her in the dark. Words did their work whether you wanted them to or not. She knew that better than anyone in this county, and she was the only one who did. \nShe drove north with the heater roaring and the wipers losing to the fog. The road hugged the cliffs and then dropped toward the water, and the cannery came up out of the murk all at once, a black shape strung with thestrobing blue of a single cruiser. Someone had rigged a work light on a stand inside. It threw the shed's ribs across the fog in long bars. \nDeputy Cutter Harris met her at the door with a flashlight and a face the color of a fish belly. \n\"You eat yet?\" he said. \n\"It's four.\" \n\"Don't,\" he said, and stepped aside to let her in. \nThe cold in the cannery was the wet, mineral cold of a place the sun had given up on. Taryn's breath went out in front of her. She smelled brine and rust and, under it, faint and clean and completely wrong for the room, soap. Not blood. That was the first thing that landed, and it landed like a hand on the back of her neck. There was no blood. \nShe let the room come to her in pieces, the way she'd trained herself to. Corrugated walls furred with rust. A conveyor gone to lace. Puddles on the concrete, still, holding the work light like coins. And in the center, on the long steel table where forty years of fish had been opened and emptied, the woman. \nTaryn stopped six feet off and made herself look. \nLate twenties. A green raincoat that Taryn would later learn was not the one Sofia had left the house in, because the one she'd left in was never found.
