It explains that introductions start broad, provide background, introduce context, and include a thesis statement plus an outline or overall plan. The body is described as the main section built from paragraphs that each develop one idea in outline order and support arguments with examples, explanations, and evidence. The conclusion summarizes and reiterates the thesis without adding new information.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/exam/","Exam",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/study-skills-structuring-essays-an-overview-of-an-essay-structure/269824/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/study-skills-structuring-essays-an-overview-of-an-essay-structure/269824.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Emma Wilson","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-30","2026-09-15",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",8,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What are the three main parts of an essay?","Question",{"text":63,"@type":64},"An essay is made up of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.","Answer",{"name":66,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":67},"How should an introduction be structured?",{"text":68,"@type":64},"Introductions should start general and become more specific, give background and context, and include the thesis statement and an outline of the essay’s plan.",{"name":70,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":71},"What should a conclusion do, and what should it not do?",{"text":72,"@type":64},"A conclusion reinforces the main message by summarizing the essay and restating or paraphrasing the thesis statement. It tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the essay. Then, we have the body of the essay—this is where you expand on the points outlined in the introduction and present specific information to support your arguments. Lastly, we have the conclusion. This is the last part of the essay and wraps up your argument. \nLet’s look at the introduction in more detail. \nIn general, introductions start general and become more specific. They introduce the topic and give some general background information. This helps the reader to understand the context of what you are writing about, and it shows why the topic is important. \nAn introduction becomes more specific when it presents the thesis statement. This states the purpose of your paper, such as supporting an argument, making a claim, analysing an issue, or explaining a topic. The introduction should also give the overall plan of the essay, or what we call an 'outline'. \nThe body is the main part of an essay. \nThe body is made up of a series of paragraphs to build up your argument. Each paragraph presents one idea to develop the thesis statement. Each idea is presented in the order of the outline in the introduction. Each idea develops your arguments and is supported by examples, explanations and evidence from sources. \nNow let's turn to the Conclusion. \nMost importantly, the conclusion reinforces your main message. It does this by giving a summary of the essay. It also restates or paraphrases the thesis statement in the introduction. Conclusions often move from specific to general. They may end with final comments about the overall topic which could include possible implications or recommendations for future research. \nKeep in mind that you shouldn't add any new information in the conclusion. \nThis is the overall structure of an essay. Use this structure to create a well-organised and cohesive essay.
