The campus is thrumming with students, some  \nhuddled around outdoor lunch tables in the quad, others gathered in small groups outside the gymnasium, everyone enjoying the final moments of sunshine and camaraderie before the first bell.  \nA girl with panicked eyes, as if just realizing she’s forgotten her homework, rushes into the admin building and hurries past a line of fidgeting students slouched in plastic folding chairs outside the assistant principal’s office. They don’t seem to mind her jumping the line. None is eager to be next. Without knocking, the girl pushes into Mr. Nason’s office where a bare-chested boy is turning his T-shirt inside out as Mr. Nason, behind his desk, writes out a detention slip.  \n“Two weeks,” says Nason to the boy, who puts the reversed T-shirt back on.“Make it through the next two weeks without screwing up and we won’t ever have to deal with each other again.” Nason hands the slip to the boy.“Now get to class, and don’t try to be woke or controversial with your shirt selections anymore, nothing political, racist, or insulting. Stick to music groups or, here’s a radical thought, try a button-down.”  \nAs the boy leaves, Nason recognizes the girl who entered his office unannounced and uninvited.“Heidi, what do you think you’re doing? If you need to talk to someone, make an appointment with your counselor.”  \n“No, I …I saw someone with a gun.”  \n“What?” Nason stands.“Where? When?”  \n“Outside the bathroom by the mobile classrooms. Two minutes ago.”“Are you sure?”  \n“Kid in a Rattlers sweatshirt coming out of the boys’bathroom. When he took his hand out of his sweatshirt pocket I saw it.”  \n“Who?”  \n“I don’t know. He had the hoodie up. I couldn’t see his face.”  \nMr. Nason grabs a walkie-talkie from its charger on his desk and barks into it.  \n“Security, we have a situation. All available hands get over to the boys’ bathroom near the portables. I’ve got report of someone with a gun. Male. Wearing a Rattlers sweatshirt.” To Heidi he asks,“What else was he wearing?”  \n“Camo pants, the kind with the extra pockets? I don’t know. Maybe it was a toy or a prop or something. Like for a class play? But it looked real. I’ve seen guns before. My dad has a few. It pulled his sweatshirt down, like it was heavy, not plastic.”  \n“This is Gamble,” says a female voice from the walkie. Heidi recognizes it as the school’s Resource Officer. “I’ll be there in thirty seconds.”  \n“I’m outside the boys’ bathroom,” comes a male voice, probably a campus supervisor.“What am I looking for?”  \n“Male in a Rattlers sweatshirt and cargo pants,” says Nason,“carrying something heavy in his sweatshirt.”  \nHeidi takes out her phone. Nason stares at her but isn’t seeing her. He’s listening hard.  \n“I don’t see anyone,” says the campus supervisor. “Bell’s about to ring. Most everybody is in class.”  \n“Check the stalls,” says Nason. “If you see anyone, don’t do anything.
