This research design used qualitative research with qualitative descriptive. The population of the research was English Literature students in academic year of 2020 at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The sample was 22 students used purposive sampling to gain the data. The data was collected using a questionnaire and Interview. In this study, the researcher analyzed data using reduction, display, and draw a conclusion. Based on the research results, the researcher found that there were some strategies used by students to overcome their problems in understanding the reading section of TOEFL. The result showed students used reading the questions before reading the text, making notes or summarizing while reading the TOEFL test, preparing before the test by familiarizing with English texts, and using skimming and scanning techniques. In conclusion, the survey results regarding the Reading Section in the TOEFL test for Universitas Negeri Makassar students clearly illustrate the challenges faced and the strategies implemented.  \nKeywords: Students’ Strategies, Reading Section, TOEFL.   \n1. Introduction  \nImproving English language proficiency has become a top priority in global higher education. English, as an international language, has an important role in facilitating cross-cultural communication, academic mobility, and access to better educational and employment resources (Kate, 2020). Therefore, many universities and educational institutions around the world use the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test as a standardized evaluation tool to measure students' English proficiency. One of the important sections in the TOEFL test is the reading section, which tests reading comprehension in English. However, many undergraduate students face problems in mastering this reading section. The reading section is often considered one of the most difficult sections in the TOEFL test by many  \nstudents, especially for those who are not native English speakers. This makes it a relevant research area as many students face concrete problems in comprehending reading passages in English. In addition, many college students experience problems in identifying the main idea of a given text, which is a basic skill tested in the reading section of the TOEFL. These challenges collectively emphasize the need for a deeper understanding of the problems students face in this important part of the test (Hammad, 2021) .  \nTherefore, in the face of such challenges, students often develop various strategies to assist themselves in overcoming the problems encountered. However, the background and effectiveness of these strategies still require further research to be well understood. Therefore, research on the strategies used to overcome the problems faced by participants  \nin the reading section of the TOEFL is also important to do. This study also provides insight into the level of preparation of students in facing the TOEFL test, so that it can help them in planning further studies or scholarships. In addition, the results of this study can be used to monitor student progress, improve educational programs, and provide important considerations in their preparation for international studies. In addition to the internal campus benefits, this study also has the potential to contribute to the academic literature related to measuring English language proficiency and students' preparation for English language exams (O'Dwyer, Kantarcıoğlu, & Thomas, 2018) .
