It contrasts symbolic and iconic diagram traditions, arguing that the void functions as an inversion of poché and becomes a conceptual armature shaping form. Metropolitan Architecture/Rem Koolhaas,Jussieu Libraries,Paris,1992-93. \n# 8.Strategies of the VoidRem Koolhaas,Jussieu Libraries,1992-93\n\nIf Walter Benjamin,in his famous and oft-quoted remark, said that archi-tecture is viewed in a state of distraction.then the iconic building so prev-alent today may reflect this condition. This prominence of iconic buildingsrelates to two factorsrfirst, perhaps to a tendency to treat the diagram asanicon:second.atendencvto applv theiconic diagram directlvtothe prob-lem of generating form.Much of Rem Koolhaas's earliest work exploresthe diagram as a symbolic form;for example, the New York Athletic Clubbecomes symbolic of a discontinuous formal diagram. However, much ofhis recent work, such as the Seattle Public Library or the Casa da Musicain Porto, privileges the idea of an iconic diagram in that the realized formof the building has a visual similitude to its diagram of functions. It canbe argued that Koolhaas's 1992 project for the Jussieu Libraries takes aposition between these two types of diagrams—that is,that it marks aninflection point in Koolhaas's shift from a symbolic to an iconic diagram, and that this movement is registered through a critique of the diagrams ofLe Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe.Le Corbusier's Palais des Congrès-Strasbourg will be seen to be an important precedent forJussieu.becausein section the project implies a continuitv between the ground and theroof. This sectional continuity denies the ground as a datum by suggest-ing that the ground is conceived as a malleable fabric, capable of beingpulled up to meet the roof.In seeking to produce a diagram that is differ-entiated from that of Le Corbusier without resorting to classical poché,Koolhaas uses the void, which is conceived as an inversion of poché,asa conceptual armature in a series of projects leading up to the JussieuLibraries. While architects such as Luigi Moretti sought to solidify thevoid,Koolhaas instead seeks to capture its energy by conceptualizing \n# 2.OMA,Mission Grande Azxe,La Defense,Paris,1991.\n\nthe void as a latent force contained betweenlayers of solid floors.\"Strategy of the Void\"is thetitle of Koolhaas's statement for his Tres GrandeBibliothèque competition entry(1989),in whichhe describes the library as a solid stack fromwhich volumes are carved:\"The major publicspaces are defined as absences of building, voidscarved out of the information solid.\"Void thusbecomes poché,as a cutting into both the build-ing and urban fabric. In adapting Koolhaas's titleto “Strategies of the Void”for an analysis of theJussieu Libraries, this chapter argues that theproject conceives the void not only as a critiqueof modernist precedents, but also as a means torethink the relationship between the subject andthe object of architecture, and ultimately to sug-gest another form of close reading. \nKoolhaas frames the Jussieu project in thecontext of its Paris university campus, the expan-sion of which had been initially truncated by thestudent uprisings of May 1968.Koolhaas belongsto a generation of architects who describe beingpowerfully affected by the events of 1968 and theliterary and cultural theories generated in itswake. These challenged the humanistic notion ofthe subject and the modernist notion ofthe objectas a part of a rational whole. While the work of a \n# 8.Le
