STORY OF THE MOORHOUSE FAMILYBy Guy McCrone\n\nA Review by Dorothy Canfield \nTHE only people whomay not enjoy thisstory of a decent,well-to-do Scottishfamily, are,I think, those who try to readit rapidly. This can'tbe done. There istoo much of it,and \nall of it needed for the picture. But there \nwill be few who try to rush its reading, for \nalmost at once the quiet,even-breathing,self-controlled rhythm of the life laid before youslows down one's hurried modern rush to astrong, steady beat.It feels like the pulse ofnormal health and full-grown strength.Itfeels fine. \nThe scene is Glasgow in the 187o's,withoccasional excursions to a not-far-away ruralregion,to the well-run farm which was theold home of the Moorhouses.Almost everyone of the large family circle is as Scottishas it is possible to be.Yet the Americanreader feels comfortably at home with them, for our folk-ways—those of the Northeastand Middle West certainly—are far moreScottish than English.Scotch immigrantsto the United States, from Carnegie on,havefelt themselves in a congenial climate, andhave thriven on what America has to offerthem.Several of these Glasgow Moorhousescould have been a Carnegie. \nHence,to follow this chronicle is a littleas though we were seeing the life of ourgrandparents in their youth. The Moor- \nhouses were brought up in youth, the plain, hard way on a farm, like so many successfulNew England families. They make good inthe city. The older ones hclp the youngerones along, and they all earn good livings. They make sensible marriages, too;in theirvocabulary, this means marrying among well-to-do people. They go steadily up the socialscale, not clawing their way,not at all—no,indeed, not even climbing—well, not reallyclimbing. They just self-respectingly movefrom one step to the one above it. \nA certain school ofmodern novelists wouldprobably portray them as cold-blooded andcalculating. The author of this fine novel re-sists the temptation to go to extremes.Withhonest realism he pictures this clan as hu-manly complex,a combination of good sense, decency and warm hearts, good sense pre-dominating.Any Moorhouse, for instance, would consider it ignoble to marry solely formoney or social position. But it is true thatthey do not manage their decorous mount-ing of the social and economic stairway with- \nout a pretty consistent putting to one side ofthe emotional fancies and unregulated leapsof thc heart, which, among pcople of less self-mastery,interfere with steady progress for-ward. \nThey are far from heartless, they are kind, and more efficiently kind because they arenot impulsive, and never do anything with-out thinking about it,carefully, first.Bel,the handsome, competent, virtuous and re-ally very attractive and lovable wife of Ar-thur,the mainstay of the family, expressestheir attitude thus,as she
