Through her grandmother’s guidance, Sophal learns practical safety habits: getting vaccinated, washing hands with soap and water before eating, after using the washroom, and before preparing food. She also discovers kitchen dangers like fire, hot water or oil, and sharp knives, plus outdoor safety near the river and careful crossing of the road. The story ends with plant awareness, warning that some plants can be poisonous if eaten.","Story 6: How can I keep safe? \nAuthor: Jill Reimer, inspired by a Storyweaver Story,“Awareness of Safety” by Jagruti Rajguru. \nEnglish \nCopyright © 2021, Jill Reimer \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)[ ](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)You are free to make commercial use of this work. For example, right now during the Covid 19 pandemic, it is important for us to get a vaccination! \nYou did that and so did I! Vaccinations protect us from many di̜erent illnesses.” \nOne day after coming home from school, Sophal ran to talk with her \nGrandmother. \n“Grandma! Grandma!” said Sophal,“How do we stay safe? At school the teacher always says ‘Be Safe’ when we leave at the end of the day. But what does that mean?” \n“Dear Sophal, yes, safety is an important thing,” said Grandma.“Come with me and let me tell you more about it.” \nThen Grandma said: “Now, let’s go to the sink in the kitchen, I’ll show you another way to stay safe. To keep healthy, it is very important to often wash your hands with soap and water. You should do this before you eat, you should do this after you use the washroom, you should do this before you prepare food. \" \nThe soap and water wash away the germs that cause disease. That keeps you healthy, said Grandma. \n“What else can we do to ‘be safe’”? asked Sophal.“Come let’s see,”said, Grandma, and she led Sophal into the kitchen. \n“Do not get too near the cooking ̊re or poke around in the ̊re, or else you might get burned. And, be very careful if there is a pot of boiling water or oil on the stove because if you accidentally tip it over, it could burn you very badly.” \nThen Grandma said,“You should also beware of sharp things, like this knife that I use to cut the meat we have for dinner. You can use the knife, but use it carefully so you do not cut yourself.” \n“Ok,” said Sophal,“Now I know we should get vaccinations, we should wash our hands frequently, we should be careful of dangerous things in the kitchen … What else can we do to ‘be safe’”? asked Sophal. \n“Come let’s see,” said, Grandma, as she led Sophal out of the house, and down to the edge of the river.“You should be very careful when you are near the river,” said Grandma.“Many children in this country have accidentally fallen into the river when they were playing on the riverbank, and because they did not know how to swim, they drowned. So, you should be very careful not to fall into the river; but you could also learn how to swim so that if you fall into the water, you could swim back to the riverbank and be safe.” \nSophal held up her right hand and pointing ̊nger by ̊nger, she said:“Ok: vaccinations, washing hands, beware of ̊re and hot water or oil on the ̊re, be careful with sharp things, learn to swim! This is what you have told me, Grandma!” Sophal held up her hand with ̊ve ̊ngers splayed. Grandma laughed.“How clever you are, Sophal! That is a good way to remember. Now there are a few more things I want to tell you about that will help to keep you safe.” \nGrandma took Sophal to the edge of the road that was on one side of their property.“Sophal, you must be very cautious when you cross this road,”said Grandma.“There are many kinds of vehicles that are coming and going on this road all day long. Sometimes they are going too fast and they cannot stop. Sometimes the driver is not paying attention and might not see you. So, it is up to YOU to be careful about when you cross the road.” \nOn the way back to the house, Grandma said,“Here is something else to watch out for,” and she pointed to a plant by the path.“It is called a desert rose. It is beautiful, but if you eat the leaves it will make you very sick! It is important to know which plants are safe and which plants are poisonous!”","cbCaimKvU7602CAu","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimKvU7602CAu","pdf",614333,2,1,14,"English","en",105,"# Story 6: How can I
