While flames burn through a new, expensive three-story home, the narrator confronts the lethal conditions inside, including intense heat behavior that makes time seem to accelerate and materials collapse. The scene raises urgent questions about who survived and whether the warden can protect the child as help approaches.","[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nBegin Reading \nTable of Contents \nAbout the Author \nCopyright Page \nThank you for buying this \nSt. Martin’s Publishing Group ebook. \nTo receive special offers, bonus content, and info on new releases and other great reads, sign up for our newsletters. \nOr visit us online at \n[us.macmillan.com/newslettersignup](us.macmillan.com/newslettersignup)[ ](us.macmillan.com/newslettersignup)[For email updates on the author](For email updates on the author), click here. \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nThe author and publisher have provided this e-book to you for your personal use only. From half a mile away, I saw explosions of sparks and orange smoke tumbling against the deep black sky. Above the inferno, the stars continued to shine with celestial indifference. The constellations had made their turn toward the coming cold; Orion, Auriga, and Taurus—all visible now. It was one of those nights you get in late October that portends an early and unforgiving winter. \nI was the first responder on the scene. \nWhen you are a game warden in Maine, you are encouraged to reside in your assigned district. No such rule applies to state troopers or sheriff ’s deputies. Think of the state map as a handmade quilt, and in each patch lives a warden. Very often, this means you are the first law enforcement officer at a rural emergency: a domestic assault, a drug-fueled home invasion, or in this case, a house fire in the rolling farmland west of Belfast. Even from a distance, I knew that everyone inside the place was dead. \nMy patrol truck skidded off the asphalt and came to a shuddering stop beside a green station wagon, the driver ’s door of which was flared open like a broken wing. \nA woman stood beyond the outer circle of the conflagration. Longhaired, tall, and rigid, she was dressed in a bathrobe that flapped around her like a Hogwarts costume. She stood with a forearm raised against the eyescalding light. She was the neighbor, the one who’d called in the blaze. \nAt first, I didn’t realize she was holding a baby in her other arm. She wasn’t cradling the infant but had it tucked against her body like a football. The little thing was wrapped haphazardly in a puffer jacket instead of a blanket. \nThat baby isn’t hers. \nWhich means someone got it out of there. \nWhen the woman turned to me—her gray hair loose and overlong, her face ascetic—it was with perfect blankness, as if she’d burned her corneas staring into the flames and couldn’t perceive me except as a shadow.“The baby!” I shouted above the roar.“Is it burned?” \n“I don’t think she is.” \n“Who’s left inside?” \nTears streamed down her sunken cheeks.“The parents. Brian went back in to get Jenna.” \nI tossed a glance at the open door. It was a black hole wreathed with licking flames. \n“No one else?” \n“Not that I know of.” \nSome fires are so intense they have what firefighters call a “thermal layer.” The air shimmers inside as the oxygen is sucked inward to feed the flames. Time moves in fast motion in there. Weeds wither and die as they might over an entire summer. Paint blackens and chars, and plastic melts until it drips from the composite gutters in inky gobs. \nI took a few steps toward the house, entering the rippling dom","cbCaibkNYM1iD14V","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibkNYM1iD14V","pdf",4210694,354,"English","en",105,"# About the Author\n# Copyright Page\n# Begin Reading\n## Opening Scene: A House in Flames\n## First Responder at the Fire\n## The Neighbor and the Baby\n## Lethal Conditions Inside","[{\"question\":\"Where does the story begin and what happens right away?\",\"answer\":\"It begins with a beautiful house on fire west of Belfast, Maine, witnessed from a distance.
