Introduction\n\nTHIS BOOK IS ABOUT the American Revolution, which isalso called the War of Independence because it freed usfrom England. The book contains selections about ourfounding fathers-George Washington,Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. It also tells about important eventsin the American War of Independence. \nThe selections are taken from readers used by Ameri-can schoolchildren in the third and fourth grades aboutone hundred years ago. \nThe selections are published here as nearly as possibleas they first appeared. The words and the illustrations arethe same.Although the size and style of type have been al-tered to provide a uniform appearance, the type selected isstillsimilar to that of the originals. The text of a few of theselections has also been shortened in order to make themmore interesting and more readable.A number of the oldreaders included vocabulary lists, questions,or activitieswith the selections.Wherever possible,I have kept these. \nIntroduction \n# Early American Readers\n\nI fell in love with old readers when I found one in asecondhand book shop in Martha's Vineyard,Massachu-setts,about forty years ago:Towne's Spelling and DefiningBook, published in 1846.It was small in size, with sharp, black and white drawings and smalltype. The little book fiteasily in one's hand and in a pocket. It contained a fewpages of instructions and exercises for the teacher and stu-dent.But mostly it contained a collection of stories that en-tertain,inform,inspire,and serve as a means of developingthe
