Social Studies class this year.Thekit you are being provided with is designed to be easy to use.We also encourage use oflocal resources, student interest and your own passion to enhance this unit. This unit deals with how people first came to live in the part of the world which todaywe call the Northwest Territories. It focuses on stories of the First Peoples of this landwhich have evolved over many generations. Some of these stories may be unfamiliar toyou. The stories themselves, and how we learn to telland hear them, provide criticalinsights to how people have lived and understood this land we now live in. \n## Getting Started\n\nHow we learn these stories is in some ways as important as what the stories themselvesare about. It is important that the context for telling and hearing these stories reflect akind of learning that the stories themselves evoke. \nThe first activity in the Stories of our Origins unit should be establishing a place, context and atmosphere within which the stories in the unit will be explored.TheWam Up Activities included in the Teacher's Guide gives some suggestions on how theappropriate context might be established in your classroom. \nThe first story you should begin with is “The Creation of the Dehcho”(found in thesection of the Teacher's Guide called “Additional Stories”).This will give allteachersa common starting point from which to work. \nOnceyou have worked through this story, you can begin using the Story Bags andStudent Activity Books. \n·You will need to make copies of the Student Activity Book for each student. \n● You will also need to make copies of the legends in the Story Bagsfor each group before they begin to teach the legend to the rest ofthe class.(These are in the story bags). \nNOTE:Be sure to look at the FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES!KEY MESSAGE \nWhen we tellstories,we are sharing the most ancient knowledge about our land. The telling and passing on of legends and stories has maintained the traditions andculture of the Dene and Inuvialuit and formed a vital part of their life.Through theselegends, students will know that there are different ways of telling history. It isimportant for students to realize the sacred nature of storytelling and the essentialskills, listening, speaking, and memory, which go with it.These stories can help us tounderstand a way of life which has existed in our land since people have been here, and which continues to shape the ways people live here today.Grade Four Social Studies-Teacher's Guide2 \n## Curricular Matches\n\nGrade 4:The NWT:Our Places,Stories and
