It connects early fire-making techniques with practical cooking methods, showing how lighting fires enabled cooking. they caught or found on the land aroundthem. They ate leaves and roots, fruit and insects.Theykilled wild animals for meat.It was only when theydiscovered how to make fire that they began to cooktheir food. \nSince that time, different ways of preparing, preserving, and cooking food have been developed.Sometimes new methods happened accidentally.Different utensils and dishes are used in countriesthroughout the world.Today, not many people havesticky fingers from scooping up their food with theirhands. \n# From Campfiresto Microwaves\n\nMatches were not invented until early in the \nnineteenth century. Before then, lighting a fire was adifficult chore. One way of starting a fire was to rubtwo sticks together. Some people discovered that theycould make a spark by striking two lumps of flint (atype of stone)together.Later, after the discovery ofmetals, iron and steel were used.Fires were kept \nburning when they weren't needed because they weredifficult to light again. When people moved to a newcampsite, they carried a burning stick. This made iteasier to start a new fire. \nBefore the development of chimneys, most cookingwas done outdoors on open wood fires on the ground. When fires were built indoors, houses filled with smoke.Sometimes a hole was made in the roof to let out someof the smoke. \nIn the Arctic, where there are no trees, the Inuitburned animal fat instead of wood. They gathered mossto use as a large wick, and laid it in a hollow of stonesthat was filled with the fat. They then set the fat-soakedmoss on fire. \nPeople still sometimes enjoy cooking food outsideover an open wood fire. \nThis modern pizza oven cooks food in the same wayas the Romans'oven. \nThe earliest ovens were hollows dug in the groundand heated with hot stones from a fire.Food wasplaced in the earth oven, covered over, and left for afew hours to cook. \nThe ancient Romans lit their fires on specially builtstone benches. They built box-shaped stone ovens.Fires of wood or charcoal were lit inside the ovens towarm them up.When the fire died down, the asheswere scraped out,and the food placed inside. This typeof oven was common for hundreds of years. \nLater,people developed other ovens. In India thetandoor oven is a clay cylindrical-shaped oven aboutforty inches(one meter)high.Sometimes the tandooris sunk into the earth up to its neck.A charcoal fire islit in the tandoor. It is allowed to burn for several hoursto heat the oven to a high te","cbCaic4U44viMwhb","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaic4U44viMwhb","pdf",4178173,36,"English","# Contents\n## Introduction\n##
