\nIt is my great honour to present Mr Steven John Tickell, who has been awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa. \nMr Tickell is a distinguished geologist and hydrogeologist whose career has spanned more than fifty years, both here in Australia and internationally. \nBorn in Melbourne in 1950, his passion for geology was sparked as a teenager, leading him to complete a Bachelor of Science with Honours at the University of Melbourne in 1971. \nHe began his career with the Geological Survey of South Africa, before returning to Australia to work with the Geological Survey of Victoria. There, he co-authored the first hydrogeological map of Victoria – a landmark achievement in groundwater science. \nIn 1990, Mr Tickell joined the Northern Territory Water Resources Division. Over the next three decades, his expertise shaped our understanding of the Territory’s groundwater systems. He produced the Dryland Salinity Hazard Map of the NT, led hydrogeological mapping across the Victoria River District, and Daly, Georgina and Wiso Basins, and played a \ncentral role in developing every groundwater allocation plan in the Northern Territory. His research has been critical in ensuring that our most precious resource – water – is managed wisely and sustainably. \nMr Tickell has also been a generous collaborator and mentor. He has co-authored more than 30 scientific papers and reports, worked closely with researchers at Charles Darwin University and the CSIRO, and in 2023 was nominated for the International Association of Hydrogeologists Career Award. \nImportantly, he has also been a tireless advocate for public understanding of groundwater, sharing his knowledge with schools, communities, and industry alike. \nChancellor, \nIn recognition of his outstanding contributions to hydrogeology in the Northern Territory, his national leadership in groundwater science, and his enduring partnership with the University through collaborative research, mentorship and public engagement, Charles Darwin University Council awards Steven John Tickell an Honorary Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa.","cbCairT7Edlet3QS","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairT7Edlet3QS","pdf",80795,"English","# Honorary degree presentation\n## Career and scientific contributions\n## National leadership, collaboration, and public engagement","[{\"question\":\"Who is Steven John Tickell and what honor has he received?\",\"answer\":\"Steven John Tickell is a geologist and hydrogeologist recognized by Charles Darwin University with the honorary degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa.\"},{\"question\":\"What are Tickell’s major contributions to groundwater science?\",\"answer\":\"His work shaped understanding of Northern Territory groundwater systems, including producing the Dryland Salinity Hazard Map of the NT and leading hydrogeological mapping across key regions, while supporting groundwater allocation plans.\"},{\"question\":\"How has Tickell influenced others beyond research?\",\"answer\":\"He has collaborated and mentored extensively, co-authored more than 30 scientific papers and reports, and advocated public understanding of groundwater through schools, communities, and industry.\"}]","Steven John Tickell - Honorary Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa | PDF"]
