An Online Journal of Music Studies ISSN 2279 – 5065 Volume 17 (2024) \nSteve Albini: the sonic legacy of a political rock \nFabrizio Elvetico \nConservatorio di Musica “Antonio Scontrino”, Trapani \nAbstract \nSteve Albini is universally known more for his work as a producer and much less for his uninterrupted activity as a musician. His music has made him one of the leading exponents of a concept of radical rock without compromises. A lot has been written about his way of recording and producing music, but almost nothing has been written about his output as a composer/performer, which, in my opinion, managed to achieve highly advanced musical forms. Prompted by Albini's untimely death in May of 2024, I would like to propose an analysis of various tracks by the bands he founded from the early 1980s, including comparisons between studio and live versions. In order to do this, I have attempted to follow a different route than the more usual one taken in popular musicology. The more usual route often starts with an overview of a practice, genre, or movement and then finds confirmation in paradigmatic cases. This is how, for example, Theo Cateforis and Peter Dale proceed in their essays on math rock. My route, however, begins with an analysis of a few tracks from a significant author (in my personal experience) and then using these cues for more general considerations. These brought forward three more points to consider: 1) to recover Albini’s role as a successor of post-punk and its tensions towards an emancipation of a more advanced form of rock than that of 1970s progressive rock; 2) to re-discuss whether or not the cultural status of various musical practices (especially those belonging to the old opposition between lowbrow and highbrow music) and the related ideological implications are as yet not fully resolved in musicology and in general; \n3) to think about an analytical methodology – and its related pedagogy – that could be used outside of an academic environment (in the wake of what Philip Tagg has already started) and thus in a more political sense, according to the movements of today's schools of thought. \nKeywords: Steve Albini, post-punk, progressive rock, math rock, complexity, body-centeredness, pleasure, cultural hierarchies, political musicology, popular music analysis \nDOI: [https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.16838867](https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.16838867) \n1. Introduction \nThe untimely demise of Steve Albini 1 (who passed away in Chicago on May 7, 2024) provided me with the opportunity to retrieve a paper I wrote in 1989 and to further develop the analyses I had previously presented in that paper. The aim is to extend that discourse concerning the role of popular music in the contemporary cultural landscape. Within that context, my stated objective was to liberate this \n1 Californian guitarist, composer, producer, and sound engineer (b. 1962) who resided in Chicago. The bands he founded over four decades were variously classified within the musical movements of punk, post-punk, hardcore, and finally, math rock. \n2 “[ ...] trarre questa musica dalle paludi sottoculturali nelle quali tuttora \nmusic from the subcultural swamps to which it is still commonly relegated. 2 As a former Conservatory student, I was not yet up to date with all the highly critical literature of historical musicology, which was as much methodological as ideological, beginning with its now impractical dichotomy between highbrow and lowbrow music (Eco, 1964; Blacking, 1973; Attali, 1977; Levine, 1988) .3 Furthermore, the notion of subculture had lost all negative connotations even relative to music, at least since \nviene comunemente relegata”(Elvetico, 1989, p. 35) . \n3 Frith (2007/2016) reconstructs the moment \"when 'highbrow','middlebrow', and 'lowbrow' music began to be distinguished, when listeners placed themselves accordingly\" (p. 124) . \n[https://lnx.gatm.it/analiticaojs/index.php/analitica/article/view/225](https:","cbCaicfl84axGO9t","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicfl84axGO9t","pdf",1898956,35,"English","# Introduction","[{\"question\":\"What motivates the analysis of Steve Albini in this document?\",\"answer\":\"The untimely death of Steve Albini in May 2024 motivates the author to revisit earlier work and develop new analyses of tracks from bands he founded.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the document propose to approach Albini’s musicologically?\",\"answer\":\"It uses an analytical route that starts from detailed analysis of selected tracks and then derives broader considerations, including comparisons between studio and live versions.\"},{\"question\":\"Which issues does the study aim to address beyond track-level analysis?\",\"answer\":\"It highlights Albini’s role as successor to post-punk, the cultural status and ideological implications of music hierarchies, and the need for an analytical methodology with related pedagogy beyond academic environments.\"}]","Steve Albini: the sonic legacy of a political rock | PDF",88]
