I know this because I’m the father of the baby and Esther would have needed to tell her mother that in order for them to discuss child support.  \nNot to mention the fact that I’m already supporting Esther, considering that she’s living here with us. The girl won’t want for anything. I’ll make sure of it. And neither will the baby.  \n“Not technically. But I know that once things settle down, once she realizes how expensive it is to raise a baby, she’ll want support from the father.”  \nI take a deep breath and deliberately ease open my fisted hands.“I think that’s Esther ’s choice. She’s eighteen.”  \n“But she has no idea what it’s like to be a mother and have to make ends meet all by herself.”  \n“Neither do you,” I remind her.  \nHer eyes flash as they meet mine. “Is that your way of reminding me that I abandoned my children?”  \n“No. It’s my way of reminding you that you not have the experience of what she’s going through. Not only that, but when you left, you were scared and alone. You’re projecting that onto Esther. She’s neither scared nor alone. She can stay here as long as she likes.”  \nRachel’s gaze falls away.  \n“What aren’t you telling me?” I ask.  \nShe licks her lips, then swallows.“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. Carter says I have a good case to try to get custody of Isaac and Peter.”  \nI feel like an elephant just sat on my chest and all the air has been compressed out of my lungs.  \n“Is…is that what you want? You’ve never said a word about wanting to get custody back. Even Esther coming out here was a bombshell.”  \n“I know. With Esther it was last minute. With the boys, Ruth will fight back. That’s why I’ve hesitated. And I think Jedediah will be on her side, trying to keep the boys in the fold.”  \n“Your oldest will take your mother-in-law’s side?”  \n“He’s the oldest boy,” Rachel says with a shrug.“He will have had amuch different experience than Esther, or even Isaac and Peter. As soon as John died, he would have become the man of the house. With that comes respect, even reverence. Definitely obedience. He’s been able to lord over his siblings. At least that’s how they put it.”  \n“You’ve been talking to the boys?”  \nRachel nods but doesn’t meet my gaze.  \n“Why is this happening without my knowledge or input?”  \n“I…I’m doing this regardless. The boys want out and I’m going to give them the opportunity to choose. An opportunity I never had until it was too late.”  \n“You’re doing this regardless?
