All fifty states and the District of Columbia responded to a survey about state testing programs, allowing comparison of practices at various grade levels. Findings cover where statewide writing assessment is established and where procedures are under development, including differences in test purpose and tested populations. Results inform remediation needs, minimum competency and graduation requirements, and improvements to curriculum and instruction, with a state-by-state appendix of survey their testing programs.Twenty-six states and theDistrict of Columbia were found to assss writing on the statewidelevel, and eight states were in the process of developing procedures.Statewide assessment was made at_various grade levels.Purpose forstatewide assessment varied,as did the population taking the test.States which conducted comprehensive assessment(where the writingability of every_student in a_specific grade was assessed)couldutilize _the results in several ways. Results were used to indicatethe need for remediation in writing,to determine whether minimumcompetency requirements had been met for graduation, and to provideinformation for improving curriculum and instruction. The appendixprovides a state by state summary of survey results.(LMO)
