We have seen a proliferation of global challenges such as pandemics, climate change, increasing poverty and inequality, conflict and fragility. These challenges require global solutions.  \nThe EU continues to stand united in its unwavering support to Ukraine in the third year of Russia’s brutal war of aggression. Since the beginning of this illegal aggression, the combined EU and Member States’ support to Ukraine has reached close to EUR 81 billion. And we will continue supporting Ukraine for as long as it takes: we recently launched the EU Ukraine Facility, which will provide regular and predictable financial support until 2027. And we have already made a first payment of EUR 4.5 billion in March.  \nWe also condemn in the strongest possible terms Hamas for its brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attack against Israel on 7 October 2023, and recognise Israel’s right to defend itself, in line with international and international humanitarian law. We are appalled by the unprecedented loss of civilian lives, including humanitarian workers, and by the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza. We call for an immediate humanitarian pause leading to a sustainable ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages and the provision of humanitarian assistance.  \nGiven this global context and the funding gap to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is important to ensure a strong global financial architecture, which is fit for purpose and can address global challenges. This has been at the heart of international discussions for almost two years now and it is important to move from vision to impact. This is the theme of this year’s Spring Meetings, and the EU welcomes the World Bank’s leadership on this process and the progress made on the Evolution Roadmap. Despite the advancements in the last year, we still have some work ahead of us.  \nFirst, the EU looks forward to the full operationalisation of the World Bank Groups’ (WBG) playbook and a strong focus on building a “better bank”. This includes the establishment of the Global Challenges Programmes, alignment of the indicators ofthe scorecard with the SDGs and a robust Dashboard to allow tracking ofWBG’s progress to improve effectiveness and efficiency of its operations.  \nIn this context, the EU welcomes the reinforced commitment ofthe WBG to support people and countries experiencing fragility, conflict and violence and that fragility has been identified as a global challenge and cross-cutting priority in the Corporate Scoreboard. Increased operational efficiency and effectiveness particularly for countries in FCV contexts is paramount. The EU looks forward to closely cooperating in fragile contexts, adhering to the principles of humanitarian, development and peace nexus.  \nBeyond the WBG evolution process, it is essential that MDBs work better as a system to have a more coordinated approach to measuring and reporting development impact. The evolution should also establish stronger, more coordinated and focused country actions, making lending from MDBs simpler, particularly for the poorest and fragile partners. In this context, the EU also looks forward to a G20 Roadmap for abetter, bigger and more effective system of MDBs, under the leadership of the G20 Brazilian
