Russia’s aggression has led not only to a direct humanitarian toll but has also contributed to food and energy insecurity and to economic instability in poor and vulnerable countries. We express our sympathy for the loss of life from this unprovoked and unjustified war and full solidarity with the people of Ukraine. We continue to underscore the need to reach a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine consistent with the UN charter and for greater international cooperation and strengthened multilateralism to prevent fragmentation and safeguard global peace and prosperity.  \nWe remain gravely concerned about the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the number of civilian deaths. We call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, which allows for the unconditional release of hostages and the rapid, safe and unimpeded flow of aid to civilians. We condemn Hamas’ attacks on October 7 and ongoing acts of terror against Israel and call on all parties to uphold international humanitarian law, including the protection of humanitarian workers and other civilians. We are also deeply concerned at the risk of escalation and a wider conflict in the Middle East, which would further contribute to regional and global economic instability. In this context, we condemn Iran’s attack on Israel on April 14 and ongoing Houthi attacks against shipping in the Red Sea. We support efforts to prevent the conflict from spreading further and restore stability in the region.  \nDespite some modest improvements in economic activity in the near term, global growth prospects remain subdued. Growth in major economies is diverging with some economies showing greater resilience than others. Global growth is projected to edge down this year and remain flat by recent historical standards. Global inflation continues to moderate but at a slower pace that was expected. Downside risks remain, but with the resilience shown by the recent indicators, there is more optimism that it will weather these risks.  \nEvolution  \nWe welcome the substantial progress that has been made under the Evolution agenda and congratulate the World Bank Group (WBG) management and staff for delivering on an ambitious and strategic agenda. We now underscore the importance of translating actions into tangible outcomes. We are pleased that the Corporate Scorecard will serve as a tool to measure collective results across the Group and will provide accountability for those outcomes. We see particular benefit in the disaggregated data that will eventually be available for outcome areas across different client groups, including small island developing states (SIDS), as well as gender and disability, providing a rich data set to track the impact of the Bank’s activities.  \nNew Playbook  \nWe note the strong focus on operational efficiency and effectiveness under the new Playbook.
