Wars and crises – including Russia ’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East and in Palestine have imposed severe humanitarian costs and triggered major disruptions to global energy, trade and food systems, placing additional strain on fragile and conflict-affected states. The conflict in the Middle East has emerged as a rapid-onset, systemic shock, amplifying inflationary pressures, tightening financial conditions, and weakening fiscal and debt sustainability across regions well beyond the immediate conflict zone. These spillovers are felt most acutely in developing countries where policy space is limited and vulnerabilities are already elevated. We welcome the World Bank’s quick response to mitigate these severe impacts and urge full use of its crisis tools to continue support for crisis-affected countries. In Palestine, we welcome the use of the World Bank’s dedicated mechanisms, such as the Trust Fund for Gaza and West Bank. While growth has shown some resilience, it remains uneven and fragile, with repeated shocks testing countries’ ability to sustain development gains and absorb further volatility.  \nIn this environment, strong multilateral cooperation is more critical than ever. With its mandate to end extreme poverty and promote shared prosperity on a livable planet, the World Bank Group plays a central role in helping developing countries manage cascading crises, protect vulnerable populations, safeguard core institutions, and stay on a path toward long-term inclusive, resilient and sustainable growth. The scale and complexity of current shocks underscore the need for a World Bank Group that is agile, wellcoordinated, including with partners, and able to operate seamlessly across crisis response, reconstruction, and long-term resilience building, including in contexts of heightened fragility and conflict.  \nThe Nordic and Baltic countries remain firmly committed to multilateralism, a world order based on international law, and open and rules-based trade. We unequivocally condemn Russia’s illegal, unprovoked, and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine, and our support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity remains unwavering. Strengthening Ukraine and working towards a just and lasting peace in line with international law are our core priorities. Sustained support from the World Bank and the IMF remains critical to safeguarding Ukraine’s budgetary and macroeconomic stability.  \nAgainst this backdrop, the Nordic and Baltic countries’ support for the World Bank Group remains strong. We reaffirm our political and financial commitment to the Bank as a cornerstone of the multilateral system, including through IDA, to ensure it can respond swiftly and effectively to today’s interconnected shocks.  \nAt the same time, scarce public resources must be used to maximum effect.
