The book should now print as a booklet for you. Please delete these notes before printing  \nStarting a Tree Nursery  \nChoosing a Site  \nIt is very important to choose a suitable site for a tree nursery. There are several things to bear in mind:  \n· it needs to be close to a permanent supply of water, so that you are able to irrigate during the dry season;  \n· it must be on well drained land;  \n· it must be close to a supply of fertile soil;  \n· it will need to be protected from animals;  \n· it should face west to east.  \nPreparation  \nTools  \nYou need a hoe, machete (or large knife), a shovel and a watering can (improvise with a large tin with holes in the base if you don’t have one) . You will also find that a wheelbarrow will be very useful.  \nContainers  \nPlastic forestry bags (6cm x 15cm) are ideal, although you may need larger ones for fruit trees. These can be openended in wet areas and closedended in dry areas. Alternatively try using tins with holes for drainage or milk containers.  \nEven better are nursery bedsand wooden boxes (see below for how to construct these) .  \nSoil Mixture  \nMix together well with a shovel:  \n· 4 parts fine topsoil,· 2 parts sand,· 1 part old manure.  \nSeeds  \nCollect ripe seeds from as many trees as you can, but make sure you only take the best. You could also ask for seed from other nurseries or from Government forestry workers. Store seed in air-tight containers with clear labels.  \nCare of Young Seedlings  \nYou should keep your seedlings for about four months in a nursery before planting out. Sow them so that the seedlings will be ready during the rainy season. Very hard seeds, such as Acacia and Leucaena, should be soaked overnight in very hot, but not boiling, water to help germination.  \nSowing Seed in Bags  \nFill bags or containers, shaking down the soil and place in groups of 100. With large seeds sow 2 or 3 seeds in each bag.
